Chapter 17 - The Shattered Empire

Heavy iron sledgehammers smashed through the pristine, hand-painted drywall of the Sterling estate.
The sound of shattering plaster, splintering wooden beams, and tearing wallpaper echoed through every floor of the massive mansion.
Dozens of rescue workers, firefighters, and federal agents worked tirelessly through the morning, systematically tearing apart the interior framing of the house.
One by one, the hidden holding shafts were exposed to the bright daylight.
One by one, terrified children, teenagers, and young adults were pulled from the dark wooden cages between the walls.
Paramedics wrapped them in warm yellow blankets, guiding them out onto the sprawling front lawn where dozens of ambulances and news vans were parked.
Emma sat on the back step of an emergency vehicle, a heavy blanket wrapped around her shoulders while a paramedic gently cleaned and bandaged the bullet graze on her arm.
Ethan sat right beside her, drinking hot chocolate from a paper cup, refusing to let go of her left hand for even a single second.
Across the lawn, news reporters from every major network were broadcasting live in front of the iron gates of the estate.
The story was exploding across the world like a wildfire.
The Sterling family's multi-billion-dollar empire had collapsed completely in less than twelve hours.
A federal agent walked over to Emma, holding a thick black folder filled with documents and photographs.
"Miss Miller," the agent said respectfully, sitting on the step beside her.
"I'm Agent Ramsey with the Federal Bureau of Investigation."
"I wanted to let you know that Eleanor Sterling was arrested forty minutes ago at a private airfield trying to board a jet to Switzerland," Agent Ramsey informed her.
"Every single asset owned by the Sterling estate has been frozen by federal judges."
"What about Mr. Sterling?" Emma asked softly, her eyes fixed on the burning mansion behind them.
"Our dive team located his body at the bottom of the main elevator shaft an hour ago," Agent Ramsey replied quietly.
"He didn't survive the fall."
Emma closed her eyes, taking a long, deep breath of the cool morning air.
The nightmare that had trapped her and her brother was finally, completely over.
"And the other children?" Emma asked, opening her eyes to look at the crowd of blankets on the lawn.
"Thirty-two victims have been rescued from the wall network so far," Agent Ramsey said, his voice trembling slightly with emotion.
"Every single one of them is being transported to the regional medical center for treatment."
"Because of what you did in that server room, we have the complete registry of every investor, politician, and buyer involved in this network."
"Arrest warrants are being executed in twelve different cities right now," he added with a grim smile.
"None of them are getting away with this."
Emma looked over at the young girl she had met in the hollow wall earlier that night.
The girl was sitting in the back of an ambulance nearby, wrapped in a warm blanket, clutching a small stuffed animal given to her by a paramedic.
The girl turned her head, saw Emma sitting on the step, and offered a soft, tearful smile of pure gratitude.
Emma smiled back, feeling a heavy weight lift off her chest for the first time in her life.
"Emma?" Ethan whispered, pulling on her blanket softly.
"Yes, Ethan?" she asked, looking down at his small face.
"Are we going home now?" he asked softly.
May you like
Emma looked around at the burning mansion, the federal agents, and the morning sun shining bright over the trees.
"We're going to build a new home, Ethan," Emma promised, kissing the top of his head. "A home with no secrets and no dark walls."
