Chapter 1 - The Shattered Wall

The heavy silver tray trembled in Emma’s white-knuckled hands as she walked across the marble floor.

Every single light fixture in the Sterling estate seemed designed to blind anyone who didn't belong here.

She was just a temporary housekeeper hired for the annual midsummer gala.

Her uniform was stiff, ill-fitting, and smelled faintly of cheap industrial detergent.

Around her, men in ten-thousand-dollar tuxedos laughed at jokes that were not funny.

Women covered in diamonds sipped champagne that cost more than Emma’s entire family earned in a year.

None of these people noticed her presence.

To them, she was simply part of the furniture, invisible and completely disposable.

Emma didn't care about their wealth or their high-society arrogance.

She only cared about finding her eight-year-old little brother, Ethan.

Ethan had been brought along earlier that afternoon because Emma had no money for a babysitter.

The head housekeeper had strictly forbidden children on the main residential floors of the mansion.

Emma had hidden Ethan in the staff lounge near the back kitchens with a coloring book and a strict instruction not to move.

That was two hours ago.

When she returned during her ten-minute break, the staff lounge was completely empty.

His backpack was still sitting on the chair.

His small red jacket was crumpled on the floor like an abandoned skin.

Emma had spent the last ninety minutes searching every accessible room on the ground floor.

Her heart had been hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird the entire time.

The butler had threatened to fire her on the spot if she raised her voice or made a scene in front of the guests.

So she was forced to search in silence, swallowing her desperate tears.

She stepped out of the noisy main ballroom and turned down a dimly lit west-wing corridor.

This hallway was lined with massive oil portraits of long-dead Sterling ancestors.

The thick velvet carpet beneath her shoes swallowed the sound of her frantic steps.

She paused near a massive wooden cabinet at the far end of the hall.

A faint, muffled sound echoed through the silent corridor.

It was a low, rhythmic scratching noise, accompanied by soft, ragged breaths.

Emma frozen in place, holding her breath to hear better.

The sound was not coming from behind the closed wooden doors along the hallway.

It was coming directly from inside the solid plaster wall itself.

She slowly approached a huge gold-framed painting of the founder of the Sterling estate.

The painting hung slightly tilted against the pristine white wall.

Emma reached out with trembling fingers and grasped the bottom edge of the heavy gilded frame.

She pulled the heavy frame forward with all her strength.

The plaster behind the canvas cracked with a sudden, violent screech that echoed down the quiet hallway.

Large chunks of dry wall tore open and crumbled onto the polished floor.

Behind the painting was not solid brick or insulation.

There was a massive, jagged hole gaping open in the hollow structure of the wall.

Emma dropped the heavy painting completely, letting it crash onto the floorboards.

A gust of freezing, stale air blew out from the dark void.

Emma dropped to her knees and peered straight into the pitch-black opening.

"Ethan?" she whispered, her voice cracking with terror.

Inside the narrow gap between the inner and outer walls, two small hands were pressing against rough wooden beams.

The wood was nailed tight in a crude cross pattern, blocking the opening from the inside.

Behind the wooden crossbars, a small, tear-streaked face emerged from the shadows.

"Emma!" Ethan sobbed out, his voice raw from hours of crying.

"Ethan! Oh my God, Ethan!" Emma gasped, tears immediately overflowing down her cheeks.

"Emma, please help me out!" Ethan screamed, his small chest heaving violently.

"Hold on, buddy! Hold on, I'm going to get you out right now!" Emma yelled, reaching her fingers into the narrow gap.

The wooden planks were covered in sharp splinters that dug deeply into Ethan’s wrists.

He was trembling so hard that his teeth were audibly chattering in the darkness.

"It's so dark in here, Emma... they locked me in... they said I couldn't leave..." Ethan sobbed frantically.

"Who locked you in here?!" Emma demanded, pulling wildly on the wooden boards.

The wooden planks were nailed down tight with thick iron spikes that refused to budge.

Ethan screamed in terror as the movement of the wall raised clouds of suffocating dust around him.

The commotion and screams finally shattered the aristocratic atmosphere of the nearby ballroom.

Gasps of horror echoed down the corridor as dozens of wealthy guests rushed out to see the disturbance.

An elderly woman clutching a massive pearl necklace dropped her crystal glass, shattering it into a hundred pieces on the floor.

"What is the meaning of this absolute outrage?!" a booming voice demanded from the back of the gathering crowd.

The crowd parted instantly as Mr. Richard Sterling himself stepped into the hallway.

He was a middle-aged man with sharp gray eyes, immaculate silver hair, and a face carved out of ice.

Beside him stood his sleek, elegant wife, Eleanor Sterling, whose face instantly turned pale.

"Mr. Sterling!" Emma screamed, turning toward him with tears blurring her vision.

"Look at this! Someone locked my little brother inside your walls!" Emma shrieked, pointing wildly into the gaping hole.

Mr. Sterling stopped dead in his tracks as his eyes fell upon the shattered drywall and the boy trapped inside.

For a split second, a look of pure, unadulterated panic flashed across his stoic features.

It was gone so fast that Emma almost thought she had imagined it.

His face hardened into an unreadable mask of cold authority.

"Get away from that wall immediately, young lady," Mr. Sterling commanded in a low, dangerous tone.

"Are you insane?!" Emma screamed back, her voice echoing off the high ceilings.

"My eight-year-old brother is bleeding inside your house!" she shouted, her hands slipping back toward Ethan.

Before her fingers could touch her brother again, two heavy hands clamped onto her shoulders from behind.

Two massive security guards in black suits dragged her backward across the carpet.

"Let go of me! Let me save him!" Emma screamed, thrashing wildly in their grip.

"Release her," Mr. Sterling ordered the guards coldly, never taking his eyes off the hole.

The guards dropped her unceremoniously onto the carpet.

Emma scrambled back onto her hands and knees, staring at the man in power.

Ethan whimpered softly from inside the dark cavity, his tiny fingers clawing uselessly at the wooden beams.

"Emma... don't leave me... please don't leave me..." Ethan whimpered softly.

The surrounding guests began whispering furiously among themselves, pointing and murmuring in shock.

"Is that a child in the wall?" a woman whispered.

"How could a child possibly get in there?" another guest asked in disbelief.

Mr. Sterling slowly stepped toward the ruined wall.

He did not look into the hole to check on the crying child.

He did not call for tools to pry the nailed wooden planks open.

Instead, he reached down and grabbed the heavy, gold-framed painting off the floor.

"What are you doing?!" Emma shrieked, lunging forward on her knees.

Mr. Sterling ignored her completely.

With a swift, powerful motion, he lifted the massive canvas and slammed it back into its original position over the hole.

The heavy wooden frame covered the jagged breach entirely.

The shadows swallowed the hole, and Ethan’s tearful face vanished behind the thick oil portrait.

The room went completely, suffocatingly silent.

"What are you doing?!" Emma screamed again, her voice breaking into a desperate sob.

She tried to push past Mr. Sterling, but he stood firmly in front of the painting like a stone wall.

Mr. Sterling turned slowly to face the crowd of wealthy onlookers.

He straightened his tuxedo jacket with complete composure.

"I apologize to everyone for this deeply unfortunate interruption," Mr. Sterling declared smoothly to the room.

His voice was calm, steady, and filled with unquestionable authority.

"This entire incident is a tragic misunderstanding," he continued without a single flinch.

"This young woman is a temporary staff member who has experienced a severe psychological breakdown tonight," he said.

"There is no child inside that wall," Mr. Sterling announced clearly.

Emma stared at him, her eyes wide with absolute horror and disbelief.

"You're lying! He's right there! He's right behind you!" Emma screamed, pointing at the portrait.

"The wall contains old plumbing pipes that make hollow, echoing noises," Mr. Sterling continued, ignoring her cries completely.

"This poor girl lost her brother in a public park three days ago and has been hallucinating ever since," he added with fake sympathy.

The guests in the hallway began nodding in slow understanding, their expressions shifting from shock to pity.

"Ah, poor thing, she's completely lost her mind," a gentleman whispered.

"How terrible for Mr. Sterling to have his party ruined by a crazy girl," a woman remarked softly.

"You monster! You utter monster!" Emma shrieked, trying to throw herself at Mr. Sterling.

The two security guards instantly grabbed her arms again, locking her in place.

Behind the heavy gold painting, a faint, muffled thumping sound began.

It was small, weak fists frantically beating against the back of the canvas.

"Emma... Emma, it's dark..." Ethan’s voice echoed weakly from behind the painting.

Mr. Sterling did not even flinch at the sound.

He adjusted his cufflinks and looked down at Emma with icy disdain.

"Guards, escort this hysterical woman off my property immediately," Mr. Sterling ordered flatly.

"If she continues to trespass or cause a disturbance, call the police and have her institutionalized," he added.

"No! Don't shut me out! Ethan!" Emma screamed as the guards began dragging her backward down the long corridor.

Her boots dragged uselessly against the velvet carpet.

She watched in sheer despair as Mr. Sterling stood guard in front of the painting.

The guests turned back toward the ballroom, returning to their champagne and light conversation.

Nobody helped her.

Nobody believed her.

The heavy double doors at the end of the hall were thrown open by the guards.

Emma was dragged out into the freezing night rain and thrown onto the gravel driveway.

May you like

The massive iron gates of the Sterling estate slammed shut behind her, locking her out in the dark.

Inside the mansion, behind the painted portrait of a dead patriarch, Ethan’s desperate knocking slowly began to fade.
