Chapter 12 - The Fire in the Deep

Eleanor Sterling’s eyes narrowed into dark, icy slits on the monitor screen.

"Touch a single server in that room, and I will have my men drop nerve gas into every ventilation shaft in the labyrinth," Eleanor threatened, her voice losing its calm composure.

"Every single child still trapped in those walls will die in agony within two minutes," she added coldly.

Emma froze, her hand hovering over a heavy bottle of industrial alcohol sitting on a maintenance cart nearby.

Ethan pulled tightly on her torn apron, his eyes wide with fear as he listened to the woman's voice.

"You wouldn't do that," Emma said, trying to hold her ground. "They are your leverage, your entire business."

"They are replaceable assets," Eleanor replied flatly without a single flinch.

"Our family built this empire over three generations; we will not let a penniless maid tear it down in one night."

"You have five minutes to walk out of that vault with your hands above your head," Eleanor commanded.

"My head of security is waiting at the upper lift station right outside that corridor."

"Surrender yourself, and I promise your brother will be given a quick, painless death," she offered with chilling sincerity.

The video feed went completely black as the connection cut off.

Emma stood in the center of the brightly lit archive room, her heart hammering wildly against her chest.

She looked at the bottle of industrial alcohol on the cart.

She looked at the massive server racks hummed with power, storing thousands of terabytes of blackmail and evidence.

If she surrendered, both she and Ethan were dead.

If she burned the room, the other trapped children might die in the gas attack.

"Emma... what are we going to do?" Ethan whimpered, looking up at her with complete trust in his eyes.

Emma dropped to her knees in front of Ethan and grabbed his shoulders gently.

"Ethan, I need you to be the bravest boy in the world right now," she whispered fiercely.

"Do you see that red emergency stop button next to the air filtration duct on the back wall?" she pointed.

Ethan turned his head and saw a large mushroom-shaped red button inside a glass protective box.

"Yes... I see it," Ethan nodded trembling.

"That button shuts down the entire ventilation network for the sub-levels," Emma explained rapidly.

"If they try to pump gas into the walls, that button seals the airflow pipes completely."

"I need you to run to that button, break the glass, and slam your hand down on it as hard as you can."

"What about you?" Ethan asked, tears brimming in his eyes.

"I'm going to make sure those monsters never hurt another person again," Emma said, her face hardening into stone.

She grabbed the heavy bottle of industrial cleaning alcohol from the cart and uncorked the top.

She splashed the flammable liquid across the central server racks, the main power distribution box, and the desk piled high with paper evidence.

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small plastic disposable lighter she had found on one of the fallen guards earlier.

"Ethan... NOW!" Emma screamed at the top of her lungs.

Ethan sprinted across the concrete floor toward the back wall with all the speed his small legs could muster.

He raised his tiny fist and smashed the protective glass box open with a loud SHATTER!

He slammed his palm down onto the heavy red button with all his weight.

A loud, mechanical alarm shrieked throughout the room: VENTILATION EMERGENCY - AIR DUCTS SEALED.

At the exact same instant, Emma flicked the plastic lighter.

A small yellow flame sparked to life in the dark.

She tossed the lit lighter directly onto the alcohol-soaked server racks.

WHOOSH!

A massive wall of bright orange fire exploded across the digital server arrays with terrifying speed.

Thick black smoke began pouring from the burning cables, setting off the internal sprinkler systems immediately.

Water rained down from the ceiling, but the chemical fire burned hot and furious, melting the hard drives and consuming the leather-bound ledgers.

Emma grabbed Ethan by the arm, and together they sprinted out of the burning vault, slamming the heavy steel door shut behind them to trap the fire inside.

The digital timer on the corridor wall flickered wildly as smoke poured through the seams: 01:15:00.

They ran into the dark corridor outside, guided only by the distant red emergency lights.

Ahead of them, the heavy steel doors of an industrial freight elevator slowly began to slide open.

Through the rising smoke, the chief of security stepped out of the elevator frame, holding a silenced pistol in his hand.

He raised the weapon, pointing it directly at Emma’s chest.

"You just made the worst mistake of your life, girl," the chief sneered, his finger tightening on the trigger.
