Chapter 9 - The Descent into Darkness

The piercing red lockdown lights flashed continuously against the wet concrete basement walls.

The shrill siren echoed violently through the narrow corridors, making the floor vibrate under Mark’s boots.

Mark squeezed himself through the narrow opening of the rusted coal chute and landed hard on the wet basement floor.

Jax followed immediately after, dropping down silently like a trained predator.

Sarah slid down third, landing softly while keeping her silenced handgun aimed up toward the dark chute opening.

Water dripped heavily from the ceiling pipes overhead, pooling on the cold concrete ground around their ankles.

"The main stairs are down that corridor to the right," Sarah whispered over the roaring siren sound.

"We need to move before the security team seals the fire doors on this level," Jax urged, checking his weapon's chamber.

Mark's heart pounded against his ribs like a sledgehammer as he stared down the dark hallway.

"Which floor is the operating room on?" Mark asked, his voice shaking with intense anxiety.

"Top floor, room four-zero-eight," Sarah answered without hesitation.

"That means we have four floors of armed guards between us and Lily," Mark said, his jaw clenching tight.

"Then we better start running," Jax said, leaping forward down the dark corridor.

They sprinted down the narrow basement hallway as red lights painted the dirty concrete walls in blood-red hues.

Up ahead, a heavy steel blast door began descending slowly from the ceiling, threatening to trap them in the basement.

"Hurry!" Sarah screamed, pushing herself to run faster.

Jax lunged forward, sliding across the wet floor on his side to wedge his heavy steel crowbar underneath the descending door.

The massive metal door slammed violently onto the crowbar, stopping just two feet above the ground with a screeching groan.

Mark scrambled on his hands and knees, sliding under the tight gap with barely an inch to spare.

Sarah slid under right behind him, rolling gracefully back onto her feet.

Jax pulled himself through last, just as the heavy crowbar snapped in half under the intense hydraulic pressure.

The heavy door slammed completely shut with a deafening metallic thud that shook the entire hallway behind them.

They were now inside the central stairwell, staring up into the dark spiral of stairs stretching up four stories high.

Heavy, synchronized footsteps echoed from the metal stairs above them.

"Guards coming down from floor two!" Jax warned, raising his pistol.

"Take cover under the stair arch!" Sarah shouted, grabbing Mark by the jacket collar and pulling him back.

Three security guards dressed in dark tactical gear descended the metal stairs with assault rifles drawn.

"Target spotted on the basement landing!" the lead guard yelled into his radio microphone.

Before the guard could raise his rifle, Jax fired two suppressed shots in rapid succession.

The lead guard collapsed instantly onto the metal steps, knocking his rifle down the stairwell.

The second guard opened fire wildly, showering the concrete wall with sparks and concrete dust.

Mark ducked his head low, covering his ears as the deafening gunshots echoed in the enclosed stairwell.

Sarah leaned around the concrete pillar and fired three precise shots directly through the second guard's vest.

The second guard slid down the steps, lifeless.

The third guard panicked, turning around to retreat back up the stairs toward the second floor.

"Don't let him alert the top floor!" Jax shouted, scrambling up the metal steps with terrifying speed.

Jax caught the third guard by his tactical vest and slammed him hard against the brick wall.

The guard grunted in pain, dropping his radio onto the metal grating below.

Jax grabbed the guard's helmet and twisted it sharply, neutralizing him instantly.

Mark ran up the stairs behind Jax, stepping over the fallen guards with wide, terrified eyes.

"We have to hurry, Mark!" Sarah shouted from below, keeping watch on the lower landing.

"The doctor is already preparing the injection up there!" Sarah added, her voice full of dread.

Mark sprinted up the stairs toward the fourth floor, his lungs burning with every gasping breath.

He reached the heavy metal door labeled "Floor 4 - Private Research Wing."

The electronic keypad next to the door was flashing bright crimson red.

"It's locked down!" Mark shouted, punching the heavy steel door in sheer frustration.

"Stand back!" Jax ordered, pulling a small plastic explosive charge from his tactical vest pocket.

Jax slapped the grey compound directly over the electronic lock mechanism on the door handle.

"Cover your ears!" Jax yelled, grabbing Mark and pulling him behind the corner of the wall.

Jax pressed the remote detonator button.

A violent, muffled explosion shattered the quiet hallway, blowing the lock mechanism completely out of the door frame.

Smoke poured out into the stairwell as the heavy steel door swung slowly open.

Mark didn't wait for the smoke to clear; he charged straight through the door into the fourth-floor corridor.

The long hallway was lined with dirty glass observation windows and flickering fluorescent overhead lights.

At the very end of the hallway stood room four-zero-eight.

Through the reinforced glass window of the room, Mark could see his daughter tied to a metal chair.

Evelyn Vance stood right next to her, holding a large glass syringe filled with clear fluid.

The doctor beside Evelyn was adjusting a mechanical restraint around Lily's small head.

"Lily!" Mark screamed at the top of his lungs, running toward the room with all his strength.

Evelyn turned her head toward the glass window and saw Mark charging down the hallway.

Instead of panicking, Evelyn smiled a horrifying, triumphant smile.

She turned to the doctor and nodded coldly.

"Inject her now," Evelyn commanded, her voice muffled through the double-paned glass.

The doctor raised the thick needle directly toward Lily's neck.

Mark slammed his shoulder into the reinforced door, but it didn't budge an inch.
