Chapter 5 - The Secret Note

Mark was shoved back inside the dark cell where Jax was waiting.
The heavy cell door locked behind him with a loud, metallic thud.
Mark leaned against the door, his chest heaving with rapid breaths.
Jax stood up from his bunk and looked at Mark intently.
"What did she say to you?" Jax asked, his voice low and gruff.
Mark opened his palm and looked at the small piece of folded paper.
"The guard handed me this on the way back," Mark said, unfolding it quickly.
Jax stepped closer and looked over Mark's shoulder under the dim light.
Written in messy blue ink were the words: "The medical examiner lies. Clara is alive."
Mark gasped, his blood running hot and cold at the same time.
"Clara is alive?" Mark whispered, his hands shaking violently.
"They told me she went into a brain-dead coma three days ago!" Mark exclaimed.
"Evelyn controls the hospital board," Jax said, his expression turning deadly serious.
"If Clara is still breathing, Evelyn is keeping her hidden to sign over the remaining assets," Jax added.
"How do we get out of here to find her?" Mark asked, looking at Jax desperately.
"I've been planning an escape from this block for six months," Jax revealed softly.
"I was just waiting for a reason to burn this place down," Jax continued.
Jax walked over to the corner of the cell near the rusty metal toilet.
He kneeled down and pulled back a loose concrete tile on the floor.
Underneath the tile was a small, homemade steel chisel and a bundle of wire.
"The night guard on this shift takes a bribe from Evelyn's men," Jax explained.
"They are planning to transfer me to a state facility at midnight," Jax said.
"That transfer van is our only way out," Jax added, looking up at Mark.
Suddenly, footsteps echoed down the hallway outside their cell.
Jax quickly kicked the loose tile back into place over the hidden tools.
Two guards stopped outside the bars, accompanied by a tall man in a dark trench coat.
It was Detective Miller once again.
Miller pulled a key card from his pocket and unlocked the heavy iron door.
"Get up, both of you," Miller commanded with a cold, sinister grin.
"Where are you taking us?" Mark demanded, stepping back toward Jax.
"Your transfer order was moved up, Mr. Vance," Miller sneered.

"Mrs. Vance decided she doesn't want to wait until tomorrow's court hearing after all," Miller added.
"You two are taking a permanent midnight ride."
