Chapter 16 - The Gathering Storm

The black helicopter descended slowly into the clearing behind the massive, abandoned timber mill structure.
Its heavy searchlight flickered twice before shutting down completely to avoid drawing attention from distant police patrols.
The rotor blades slowed down, their loud whirring noise fading into the background of the howling wind and pouring rain.
Mark stepped out of the helicopter cabin first, carrying Lily wrapped securely in his arms beneath the warm blanket.
Sarah followed right behind them, holding her silenced pistol low at her side as she scanned the dark perimeter.
The old timber mill was a massive, decaying industrial building filled with ancient wood-cutting machinery and iron conveyor belts.
Rusted sheet metal panels rattled loudly against the structural framework of the building in the violent storm wind.
"The ground transport should be parked inside the main loading bay," Sarah said, pointing toward the heavy wooden doors.
"Once we get the truck keys, we can drive across the state line in two hours," Sarah explained as they walked through the mud.
"What about Jax and Clara?" Mark asked, his voice full of intense dread as he remembered the static phone call.
"We will send a rescue team back to the tunnel coordinates the moment we cross the border, Mark," Sarah promised softly.
They pushed open the small side entrance door of the timber mill and stepped inside the vast, dark interior.
The air inside smelled strongly of rotting sawdust, machine oil, and old rust.
Faint moonlight filtered through the broken skylights on the high ceiling, casting long, eerie shadows across the floor.
Huge rusty saw blades, eight feet in diameter, hung from iron chains along the wooden support pillars.
"Daddy, I'm scared..." Lily whispered, hiding her face in Mark's shoulder as her small body shivered.
"It's okay, sweetie, we are almost safe," Mark comforted her, kissing her cold forehead tenderly.
Suddenly, a loud metallic thud echoed from the upper catwalk platform overlooking the entire mill floor.
Sarah instantly raised her handgun, aiming it straight up into the dark shadows of the upper platform.
"Who's up there?!" Sarah shouted, her voice echoing loudly through the massive wooden building.
Slowly, the heavy overhead floodlights mounted on the wooden ceiling pillars clicked on one by one with a loud buzz.
Blinding yellow light illuminated the entire factory floor, making Mark and Sarah shield their eyes in shock.
Standing on the high metal catwalk twenty feet above them was Evelyn Vance, holding a heavy pump-action shotgun.
Her crimson dress was completely destroyed, her face covered in dried blood and black soot.
Beside her on the catwalk stood two corrupt private security guards holding assault rifles aimed straight down at Mark.
"Welcome to my court, Mark," Evelyn sneered down at them, her voice echoing with chilling madness.
"Did you really think you could escape me in my own county?" she asked, racking the slide of her shotgun with a sharp click.
Mark stepped backward, shielding Lily with his own body as his heart pounded violently against his ribs.
"Where is Clara, Evelyn?!" Mark roared up at her, his eyes burning with fury and desperation.
Evelyn smiled a terrifying, manic smile, leaning over the handrail of the catwalk.
"Your sweet wife is buried under fifty tons of rock at the bottom of the river, Mark," Evelyn lied smoothly.
"And now, you and your little brat are going to join her in hell!" Evelyn shrieked, aiming the shotgun down at Mark.
Before she could pull the trigger, a loud gunshot shattered the silence from the dark entrance behind Evelyn.
The guard standing next to Evelyn gasped, clutching his neck as blood spattered across the metal catwalk railing.
He fell backward over the railing, crashing down twenty feet onto a rusty iron conveyor belt below.
Evelyn turned her head in shock toward the dark catwalk entrance.
Standing at the top of the metal stairs was Clara, holding Jax's heavy revolver with both hands.
Her eyes were completely filled with fierce, unstoppable maternal rage as she pointed the gun straight at Evelyn.
"Get away from my family, you monster!" Clara screamed at the top of her lungs.
Mark gasped in utter shock, tears springing into his eyes as he looked up at his wife.
"Clara!" Mark cried out in pure disbelieving joy.
"Mommy!" Lily shouted from Mark's arms, reaching her tiny hands toward the catwalk.
Evelyn’s face twisted in absolute horror and disbelief as she stared at the daughter she had tried to destroy.

"You..." Evelyn gasped, her hands shaking violently on her shotgun. "You're supposed to be dead!"
"My family doesn't die so easily, Evelyn!" Clara shouted, pulling the trigger of the revolver a second time.
