Chapter 7 - Ambush on the Highway
Mark pressed his ear against the metal partition separating the back from the front cab.
More gunshots rang out in rapid succession, followed by the sound of breaking glass.
"Stay down!" Jax growled, pulling Mark down onto the steel floor of the van.
The driver’s side door of the transport van burst open with a loud metallic crash.
Heavy footsteps ran around to the rear of the vehicle.
The heavy lock on the back doors rattled violently from the outside.
Mark grabbed a heavy metal fire extinguisher mounted on the interior wall.
He held it raised above his shoulder, ready to strike whoever opened the door.
The rear doors flew wide open, revealing the rain pouring down outside.
A tall figure in a black raincoat holding a silenced pistol stepped into the doorway.
Mark swung the fire extinguisher forward with all his strength.
The masked figure caught the extinguisher with one hand and shoved Mark back into the van.
"Stop swinging, you idiot!" a sharp female voice shouted over the sound of rain.
The figure pulled down her wet ski mask.
It was the waitress from the small-town diner—the 45-year-old woman with short hair.
Mark stared at her in utter disbelief.
"Sarah?!" Jax gasped, pushing himself up off the floor.
"You're late, Jax," Sarah said, pointing her weapon back toward the dark road.
"Detective Miller's men are right behind us," Sarah warned rapidly.
"Who are you?!" Mark yelled, bewildered by the chaotic situation.
"She’s my sister-in-law and Clara's real aunt," Jax explained quickly, hopping out of the van.
"We don't have time for family reunions," Sarah said, tossing a set of key cards to Jax.
"Evelyn has already moved Lily out of her main estate," Sarah revealed.
"Where did she take my daughter?!" Mark shouted, grabbing Sarah's arm.
"She took her to the old asylum on the edge of the county," Sarah answered.
"She has doctors waiting there to perform an illegal surgical procedure on Lily," Sarah added.
Mark felt his chest tighten so hard he could barely breathe.
"What procedure?!" Mark screamed into the rain.

"They are going to erase her memory using experimental neural drugs," Sarah said chillingly.
"If we don't get there in twenty minutes, Lily will never remember who you are."
