Chapter 19 - The Miracle in the Mud
At the very last second before the blade made contact, a massive hand reached through the side paneling of the belt.
A heavy, tattooed arm grabbed Evelyn by her collar with incredible brute force.
With a terrifying roar of effort, Jax pulled Evelyn off the moving belt just inches away from the spinning saw.
They both crashed onto the sawdust-covered floor as the conveyor belt ground to a halt against a jammed timber.
Jax lay on his back, coughing violently as muddy water and blood soaked his shirt.
He had dragged himself through the flooded drainage tunnel with broken ribs to reach the mill in time.
Evelyn lay beside him, trembling violently in complete shock and crying uncontrollably.
Her mind was completely broken by the sheer terror of facing her own immediate death.
Sarah quickly stepped forward and secured Evelyn's wrists with heavy tactical zip-ties behind her back.
Detective Miller and the corrupt officers were nowhere left to back her up; their empire was completely gone.
Clara dropped to her knees beside Jax, wrapping her arms around her brother's wounded shoulders.
"You came back..." Clara sobbed, tears flowing down her dirty face into her smile.
"I told you... family doesn't leave family behind," Jax coughed out, smiling weakly through his bruised lips.
Mark walked over with Lily safely resting in his arms.
Lily looked down at her mother, her big hazel eyes filled with overwhelming happiness.
"Mommy?" Lily whispered softly, reaching out her tiny hands.
Clara stood up and took Lily into her arms, kissing her face over and over again as they wept together.
Mark wrapped his arms around both of them, holding his wife and daughter tightly against his chest.
The long, nightmare ordeal was finally over.
