Behind Her Painted Smile / Chapter 1 / 20

Chapter 1 - The Illusion of Victory

The silver handcuffs clicked around Evelyn Vance’s wrists with a harsh, metallic snap.

The officer pulled her arms firmly behind her tailored burgundy suit jacket.

A cold satisfaction swept through Mark’s chest as he held his breath.

He looked down at his seven-year-old daughter, Lily, resting quietly on the hospital bed.

Lily’s small pale hand rested on the white linen sheet.

Her hazel eyes remained remarkably calm, staring right at her grandmother.

"It's over, Evelyn," Mark said, his voice trembling with years of buried rage.

"You will never touch my daughter again," he added, stepping in front of Lily’s bed.

Evelyn stopped moving.

She slowly turned her head back toward Mark.

Her silver hair was completely immaculate.

Not a single strand was out of place despite her dramatic screaming fit seconds earlier.

A horrifying smile gradually spread across her aged face.

The loud theatrical scream she had put on for the police disappeared instantly.

"Do you really think a pair of metal cuffs can stop me, Mark?" Evelyn asked softly.

Her voice was ice-cold and chillingly controlled.

"You are so hopelessly naive, my dear son," she whispered.

"Take her out," the police officer ordered, nudging Evelyn toward the heavy hospital room door.

"You have no idea what you just unlocked," Evelyn murmured as she passed Mark.

She leaned toward Mark's ear for a split second.

"Check your hospital bill and your bank account, Mark," she hissed.

Mark's blood ran cold.

The heavy door swung shut behind the police officer and Evelyn.

The room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence.

Mark immediately rushed to Lily’s side.

He knelt by her bed and took her tiny hand into his hands.

"Are you okay, Lily-bug?" Mark asked softly, kissing her forehead.

"I’m not scared of her anymore, Daddy," Lily said softly.

"She told me a secret before you walked in," Lily added.

Mark frowned, his pulse spiking again.

"What secret?" Mark asked.

"She said... Mommy didn't die in an accident," Lily whispered.

Mark stared at his daughter in utter shock.

Before Mark could ask another question, his phone buzzed violently in his coat pocket.

He pulled it out with trembling fingers.

It was an urgent notification from his bank.

His balance showed zero dollars.

Every single life savings account had been completely liquidated.

A second notification flashed across the screen from the hospital's billing system.

His insurance had been revoked due to suspected fraud.

Then, his phone rang from an unknown private caller.

Mark answered immediately, pressing the phone against his ear.

"Who is this?" Mark demanded.

"Mr. Mark Vance?" a deep, unfamiliar voice spoke on the line.

"Yes, who is this?!" Mark yelled.

"This is Detective Vance's personal attorney, Arthur Pendelton," the voice said calmly.

"I am calling to inform you that Mrs. Evelyn Vance has been fully released on bail five minutes ago," the lawyer continued.

"What?!" Mark screamed. "She was just arrested in front of police!"

"And she has just filed emergency child protection papers against you," the lawyer replied coldly.

"Police officers are currently on their way up to your daughter's hospital room to execute an emergency protective custody order."

Mark froze in absolute horror.

The elevator doors at the end of the hall dinged open loudly.

Heavy footsteps began marching down the quiet hospital corridor.
