Chapter 6 - Midnight Transfer

The cold night air hit Mark’s face as he was shoved out the back doors of the county jail.

Heavy steel chains bound his ankles together, making every step a struggle.

Jax walked right beside him, his head bowed low in complete silence.

A large black prisoner transport van sat idling in the dark alley behind the facility.

Rain began to fall steadily, slicking the asphalt pavement below their feet.

Detective Miller stood near the open doors of the transport van with a heavy handgun holstered at his hip.

"Get inside," Miller ordered, motioning with his flashlight.

Mark stepped up into the dark interior of the transport van.

Jax followed closely behind him, his heavy boots thudding against the metal floor.

The two corrupt guards slammed the rear doors shut and locked them from the outside.

The engine revved loudly, and the van lurched forward into the rainy night.

Inside the dark, enclosed space, Mark looked at Jax with pure panic in his eyes.

"They aren't taking us to another prison, are they?" Mark whispered hoarsely.

"No," Jax replied, his voice calm and methodical.

"They are taking us to the old industrial docks near the river," Jax added.

"That's where Evelyn disposes of her unwanted problems," Jax said.

"Then we're going to die tonight!" Mark gasped, pulling uselessly at his wrist shackles.

"Not tonight," Jax said, reaching inside his leather boot.

He pulled out the thin piece of metal wire he had hidden earlier.

In complete darkness, Jax began picking the lock of his wrist cuffs with terrifying precision.

A soft click echoed inside the moving van.

Jax's hands came free instantly.

"How did you do that so fast?" Mark asked in total awe.

"I spent ten years in federal prison before I met you, kid," Jax muttered.

Jax immediately leaned over and inserted the wire into Mark's handcuffs.

Another crisp click echoed over the noise of the engine.

Mark's hands were freed from the heavy steel restrains.

Suddenly, the transport van swerved violently to the left, throwing both men against the wall.

The tires shrieked against the wet pavement as the vehicle screeched to a sudden halt.

Voices began shouting frantically from the front cab of the van.

A loud gunshot shattered the night air outside.
