Behind Her Painted Smile / Chapter 12 / 20

Chapter 12 - The Breaking Point

Jax stared at the digital countdown timer on the vault door as it ticked down dangerously fast: 00:45... 00:44...

Panicked banging sounded from the other side of the heavy steel door.

Clara was inside, screaming weakly as the remaining oxygen in the sealed vault ran out completely.

"Clara!" Jax screamed, slamming his heavy boots against the thick reinforced steel frame.

The massive steel structure didn't even vibrate under his kick.

Evelyn laughed hysterically from the wet floor, her hands tied behind her back as water rose around her waist.

"You can't break through five inches of solid steel, Jax!" Evelyn mocked, her voice echoing in the dark basement.

"She has thirty seconds left to live!" Evelyn laughed insanely.

Jax didn't waste another second arguing with the madwoman.

He turned toward a heavy industrial electrical control junction box mounted on the brick wall next to the door.

High-voltage warning signs were stamped across the yellow metal paneling.

Jax smashed the glass cover of the control box with the butt of his heavy handgun.

Thick copper cables carrying thousands of volts of electricity sparked violently into the wet air.

"Jax, what are you doing?!" Evelyn gasped, her laughter dying instantly as horror washed over her face.

"If you touch those bare wires in this flooded room, you will electrocute us both!" she screamed in utter panic.

Jax looked at the timer: 00:15... 00:14... 00:13...

He ripped off his wet leather vest and wrapped it tightly around his right hand for insulation.

Jax grabbed the main high-voltage power cable directly with his insulated hand.

"Clara, hold on!" Jax roared at the top of his lungs.

Jax jammed the exposed live copper wire directly into the digital electronic lock mechanism of the vault door.

A blinding flash of blue electric light exploded through the dark basement with a deafening bang.

Sparks flew everywhere, blinding Evelyn as she screamed in pure terror.

The intense electric surge completely short-circuited the vault's hydraulic lock system.

The massive steel locking bolts retracted inside the door with a loud, mechanical hiss.

The heavy vault door slowly creaked open an inch.

Jax threw the cable aside, lunged forward, and pulled the heavy steel door open with all his remaining physical strength.

Inside the dark, airless concrete room, Clara's pale body collapsed forward onto the wet floor.

Jax caught her before her face hit the water, pulling her limp body into his arms.

"Clara! Clara, wake up!" Jax yelled, slapping her cold cheeks gently.

Clara gasped violently, taking a deep, agonizing breath of fresh air into her starved lungs.

Her weak eyes fluttered open slowly in the dim emergency light.

"Jax...?" Clara whispered hoarsely, tears streaming down her bruised face.

"I've got you, little sister," Jax sobbed, holding her tight against his chest. "I've got you."

Meanwhile, high up on the rain-swept roof of the building, the standoff reached its breaking point.

Red laser dots were fixed firmly on Mark's chest as Detective Miller took two more steps forward.

"This is your last chance, Mark," Miller shouted over the roaring wind.

"Hand over the child, or my men will open fire right now!" Miller threatened, his finger tightening on the trigger.

Lily hid her head in Mark's neck, crying quietly in absolute terror.

"You corrupted bastard!" Sarah yelled at Miller, holding her hands up in the air.

"You sold your badge to a child murderer!" Sarah shouted, trying to buy time.

"Shut up!" Miller barked, flicking his safety switch off.

"On my mark, fire!" Miller ordered the SWAT officers beside him.

Suddenly, a loud, thundering roar echoed from the stormy clouds directly above the rooftop.

A massive searchlight cut through the dark night sky, blinding Detective Miller and his officers completely.

The roaring sound of heavy helicopter blades filled the air as a massive black transport helicopter descended through the rain.

The intense wind from the helicopter rotors blew the police officers backward, forcing them to shield their eyes.

A heavy side door on the helicopter swung open, and a man tossed a thick rope ladder down onto the roof surface.

"Mark! Get on the ladder now!" Sarah screamed, grabbing Mark's arm and pulling him toward the dangling rope.

Detective Miller wiped the rain out of his eyes, raised his handgun into the blinding light, and fired two wild shots.

A bullet grazed Mark's shoulder, ripping through his jacket fabric.

Mark grunted in pain, but he gripped the rope ladder with one hand while holding Lily securely with his other arm.

"Hold on tight, Lily!" Mark yelled, beginning to climb the swaying rope ladder into the roaring chopper.

Sarah grabbed the lower rungs of the ladder right beneath Mark, keeping her body between Mark and Miller's bullets.

The helicopter pulled up sharply into the dark night sky, lifting them away from the asylum roof.

Below them on the roof, Detective Miller screamed in rage, firing his gun uselessly into the stormy clouds.

Inside the dark cabin of the helicopter, Mark pulled Lily safely onto the floor mat.

He looked back down through the open side door at the burning asylum building below.

Down in the flooding basement, Jax carried his weak sister Clara toward the rear emergency exit tunnels.

Behind them, Evelyn Vance crawled out of the dark water, her clothes soaked and her face twisted in absolute madness.

She picked up a discarded heavy steel pipe from the flooded floor, her eyes burning with lethal fury.

She silently stalked behind Jax and Clara as they moved through the dark basement tunnel.
