Chapter 8 - The Vault's Secret

Before Miller could pull the trigger, the precinct emergency alarms blared through the building.
The lights in the office flickered violently and died, plunging the entire room into total darkness.
Marcus lunged across the desk, grabbing Miller's wrist and forcing the gun barrel toward the ceiling.
A gunshot deafened the room, shattering the fluorescent light fixture above their heads.
Marcus struck Miller across the jaw with his elbow, knocking the detective backward over his desk.
Marcus snatched the flash drive from the USB port and sprinted into the dark hallway.
Smoke began pouring from the ventilation shafts as tear gas canisters bounced down the stairwell.
A black-ops strike team was raiding the police precinct to cover up the paper trail.
Marcus burst through a emergency exit door, tumbling out onto the lower level parking structure.
A stolen delivery van was idling near the gate with its side door swinging wide open.
A hand reached out from the dark interior of the van and grabbed Marcus by his jacket collar.
"Get in if you want to stay alive!" a harsh voice shouted through the roar of the rain.
Marcus pulled himself into the moving vehicle, slamming the side door shut as bullets chipped the rear glass.
He looked up to see who had saved him in the middle of the chaotic shootout.
It was the waitress from the diner near headquarters, holding a military-grade tracking scanner.
"Who are you?" Marcus demanded, catching his breath against the metal interior wall.
"My name is Maya, and I work for the federal task force monitoring Vault 7," she replied calmly.

"Vault 7 isn't an underground safe or a offshore bank account, Marcus," she added, looking back at him.
"It's a digital bio-surveillance system designed to track and control every public official in the country," she said.
