Chapter 20 - Authority Restored
Three weeks later, bright sunlight poured over the quiet, manicured lawns of the national cemetery.
Marcus stood in a sharp black suit beside Sarah, who was laying a bouquet of white lilies onto Eleanor's marble headstone.
The public news reports had cleared Marcus of all criminal charges, framing him as a national hero who exposed global corruption.
Arthur Pendelton and forty senior corporate executives were currently facing life sentences without parole.
Sarah wrapped her arm around Marcus's waist, resting her head gently against his chest.
"She carried that terrible burden all by herself for twenty years," Sarah whispered, staring at her mother's engraved name.
"She did it to protect you, Sarah," Marcus said softly, running his hand gently through her hair.
"And she knew you were the only man brave enough to help her end it," Sarah added, looking up into his eyes.
Detective Jim Miller stepped out from a black sedan nearby, wearing plain clothes and holding a brown leather package.
"The federal task force officially closed the Vance Global case this morning, Marcus," Miller said, handing him the box.
Marcus opened the flap of the leather package, looking inside at the object resting on the velvet lining.
It was his original brass security badge, restored and polished to a mirror shine, with a new gold seal stamped across the center.
Underneath the badge was a small sealed envelope addressed to Marcus in Eleanor's unmistakable handwriting.
Marcus broke the wax seal and pulled out a single sheet of heavy parchment paper.
The handwritten note read: "Authority was never in the metal badge, Marcus."
"The badge was merely the key that opened Vault 7's final failsafe program."
"And as you read this, the secondary protocol has just transferred total ownership of Vance Global Security to you."
Marcus stared at the letter in sheer shock as his phone vibrated violently in his pocket.
He pulled out the device to see an encrypted message from an unregistered, international number.
"Congratulations on your promotion, Director Vance," the message read.
