Chapter 1 - The Weight of the Badge

The air inside the high-security lobby felt freezing cold.

The heavy metallic doors slammed shut behind the disgraced guard.

His name was Marcus Vance, and his life had just shattered in six seconds.

His face was still hot from where his cheek had been pressed into the cold floor.

The sound of his stripped badge hitting the steel bin echoed in his mind like a gunshot.

Director Eleanor Vance did not even look back at him as she walked into her private executive elevator.

She adjusted her gold earrings without a single flickering emotion on her pale face.

She was not just the high-ranking executive of Vance Global Security.

She was also his estranged mother-in-law.

Marcus stumbled onto the rain-slicked city pavement outside.

Sirens echoed in the distance through the foggy evening air.

He pulled his worn jacket tightly around his chest to block the damp chill.

His phone vibrated violently in his pocket.

He pulled it out with trembling fingers.

The screen displayed a text message from an unknown encrypted number.

"You took the hit just like we agreed."

"Now ensure your wife never finds out what is inside Vault 7."

Marcus stared at the dark screen as his heartbeat thundered in his ears.

He wiped the sweat from his forehead.

He had deliberately raised his voice and pushed Eleanor on camera.

It was an outrageous, career-killing act of violence.

Everyone in that lobby thought he had lost his mind.

They thought he was just an unhinged, power-drunk security officer snapping under pressure.

None of them knew the truth.

None of them knew that Eleanor had given him a silent nod right before he lunged at her.

It was all a carefully staged distraction.

While the tactical team tackled him to the marble floor, a silent flash drive was slipped into his inner pocket.

Marcus reached into his jacket and felt the sharp metal edge of the hidden drive.

He looked back up at the towering glass skyscraper.

Eleanor was playing a game far more dangerous than anyone imagined.

And Marcus was the only piece on the board willing to burn his own life to save his family.

He turned his collar up and walked into the dark alleyway.

A black SUV with tinted windows slowly pulled away from the curb to follow him.
