Chapter 14 - Hunted

The elevator doors chimed and slid open, exposing the dark shaft leading down to the parking garage.

"Get Sarah out of the city, Maya!" Marcus ordered, pushing his wife gently into the lift car.

"Marcus, no! Don't leave me!" Sarah sobbed, reaching out to grab his torn sleeve.

"I have to end this tonight, or we will never be free," Marcus said, looking into her eyes with deep resolve.

He stepped back and hit the emergency override button, sending the elevator descending rapidly.

The heavy steel doors slammed shut, separating them once again.

Eleanor closed her laptop with a sharp snap and pulled a compact keycard from her jacket pocket.

"Arthur has locked down the entire city infrastructure," Eleanor said as sirens echoed through the streets outside.

"Every police unit, private contractor, and automated sniper turret is hooked into his network," she warned.

"Then we take out the master relay," Marcus replied, checking the remaining rounds in his magazine.

Suddenly, a high-caliber sniper round blew through the floor-to-ceiling glass panel, shattering the entire wall.

The blast knocked Marcus and Eleanor to the floor as glass shards rained down like hail.

Across the street, on the roof of a opposing skyscraper, red laser sights swept across the room.

"They have the penthouse pinned down!" Marcus shouted, crawling behind a concrete pillar.

"There is an emergency access catwalk under the skybridge," Eleanor called out, pointing toward the edge.

Marcus grabbed Eleanor by the arm, helping her stay low as bullet impacts chewed up the carpet.

They sprinted toward the narrow exterior ledge, suspended three hundred feet above the city streets.

Rain and icy winds whipped against their faces as they stepped out onto the slick metal catwalk.

Behind them, heavy footsteps echoed through the ruined penthouse as the hit squad pressed forward.
