Chapter 17 - Burning Bridges

Arthur took the metal drive with a chuckle of victory, plugging it directly into his emergency terminal.
"A wise business decision, Eleanor," Arthur said, watching the progress bar fill on his screen.
"You always were a survivor, unlike your idealistic son-in-law," Arthur mocked, looking at Marcus.
Marcus stood completely motionless, his eye catching the small green light flickering on Eleanor's watch.
It wasn't a standard timepiece; it was a high-frequency EMP trigger device used in black-ops demolitions.
She hadn't betrayed him; she had delivered the drive to get the EMP charge within inches of the main terminal.
Eleanor tapped her wrist twice in rapid succession.
A deafening crack of blue electricity erupted from her watch, blinding everyone in the room.
Sparks showered from Arthur's terminal as the digital screen exploded in a violent pop.
The back-up surge instantly ignited the room's lithium power cells, setting the far wall ablaze.
"Kill them!" Arthur shrieked, clutching his face as the terminal burst into flames.
Marcus lunged forward, tackling the first bodyguard into the burning desk.
The second guard fired blindly through the thick black smoke, hitting the wall behind Marcus.
Marcus grabbed the fallen guard's tactical shotgun and fired two heavy rounds through the smoke.
The second guard collapsed onto the floor as flames rapidly engulfed the entire boardroom.

Marcus looked around frantically through the blinding smoke for Eleanor.
She was kneeling near the burning terminal, her clothes singed by the electrical blast.
