Chapter 9 - A DEADLY BARGAIN

By nightfall, the storm over the city had intensified into a raging torrential downpour.

Inside the quiet office of the rail yard, Mark stood staring at a paper map of Pier 41 laid out across a wooden desk.

Jax pointed a thick finger at the layout of the abandoned shipping harbor.

"Pier 41 is surrounded by rusted metal shipping containers," Jax explained, mapping out the entry points.

"It’s an ambush paradise. Julian will have snipers posted on top of the cranes, and his men will surround you the moment you walk down the central walkway."

"I know," Mark said, tracing the perimeter with his eyes. "That's why I'm not going to run away."

"I'm going to walk right into the middle of it."

Sarah opened the office door, holding a steaming mug of tea, her face still drawn and pale.

"Mark, you can't go," Sarah begged, her voice crackling with emotion. "It’s a death sentence!"

"If I don't go, Sarah, Julian will keep hunting us for the rest of our lives," Mark replied, taking her by the shoulders.

"He won't stop until Leo is dead and you are in prison."

"We end this tonight so our son can have a future."

Before Sarah could respond, Mark’s burner phone rang again, vibrating violently against the wooden desk.

Mark picked it up, putting it straight onto speakerphone.

"Are you ready to surrender, little brother?" Julian’s mocking voice rang clear through the speaker.

"I'm on my way to the pier, Julian," Mark answered coldly. "I have the key."

"Smart boy," Julian sneered. "Make sure you come alone."

"My men are watching every road leading into the harbor district."

"If they see a single police cruiser or any of your little friends, I will personally sign the arrest warrant for Sarah's father before you reach the dock."

"I'm coming alone," Mark lied, keeping his tone perfectly flat.

"Just make sure Eleanor is there."

"I want her to watch me hand over the key so she knows her precious family legacy is built on extortion."

Julian laughed darkly through the receiver.

"Mother will be there, Mark," Julian promised maliciously. "She wouldn't miss your destruction for the world."

The line clicked off as Julian ended the call.

Mark looked at Jax, who nodded silently in understanding.

"My crew is already moving out," Jax said, strapping a heavy leather holster across his chest.

"We’ll circle around the harbor from the water side using speedboats."

"When you give the signal, we collapse the perimeter."

Mark picked up a dark raincoat, slipping it on over his suit.

He turned to Sarah, pulling her into a tight, desperate embrace.

He held her close, smelling the sweet scent of her hair while listening to the steady rhythm of her heart.

"Take care of Leo," Mark whispered into her ear.

"I'll be back before dawn."

Sarah clung to his jacket, tears wetting his lapel.

"Please come back to me, Mark..." she sobbed softly.

Mark broke the embrace, stepping out of the office and heading into the pouring rain.

He climbed back into the battered SUV, turned the key, and watched the headlights cut through the pitch-black alleyway toward Pier 41.

The final confrontation was only minutes away.
