Chapter 14 - THE EMPTY VAULT

The reinforced glass doors of the bank’s main entrance shattered inward with a deafening explosion of safety glass.

Mark burst into the marble lobby, his clothes drenched in rain and stained with blood from his shoulder wound.

Jax and three muscular bikers flanked him, their heavy leather boots echoing like thunder across the polished stone floor.

Security alarms shrieked through the building, red emergency strobe lights flashing against the grand pillars.

Two bank security guards drew their weapons, but Jax stepped forward, holding up a federal marshal badge he had secured years ago.

"Federal authority! Stay where you are!" Jax bellowed, his voice commanding absolute obedience.

The guards hesitated, lowering their guns in sheer confusion as Mark sprinted toward the grand marble staircase leading to the basement vaults.

Down in the vault room, Eleanor stood frozen beside the opened compartment of Box 419, clutching the blank ledger to her chest like a weapon.

Mark rounded the corner, stopping ten paces away at the heavy iron gate of the vault chamber.

Behind him, Sarah stepped into the hallway, holding Leo securely wrapped in a warm blanket.

"Looking for these, Eleanor?" Mark shouted, his raspy voice cutting through the ringing alarms.

Mark raised his right hand, holding up a thick yellow Manila envelope bound with heavy red sealing wax.

Eleanor dropped the blank ledger. It hit the marble floor with a dull thud.

Her face drained of all color, her pale lips trembling as she stared at the envelope in Mark’s hand.

"How... how did you get those?!" Eleanor stuttered, taking an instinctive step backward into the vault. "The key... the key was for Box 419!"

Sarah stepped up beside Mark, her eyes burning with a calm, fierce determination that Eleanor had never seen before.

"The key wasn't for the bank, Eleanor," Sarah revealed, her voice steady and clear.

"The numbers 4 - 1 - 9 were the locker combination at the central bus terminal where your late husband kept his personal emergency stash."

"I swapped the documents three days ago while you were out at your charity gala."

"You spent the last three days hunting an empty key while the real will was safe in my possession!"

Eleanor’s mask of aristocratic elegance shattered completely, revealing the hideous, unhinged monster beneath.

"You little street rat..." Eleanor spat, her voice shrill and venomous as she pointed a trembling finger at Sarah.

"You ruined everything! That fortune belonged to MY family!"

"It belonged to your grandson, Eleanor," Mark corrected cold-heartedly, signaling toward the top of the stairs.

Four city police officers and two plainclothes detectives rushed down the steps, their weapons drawn and handcuffs ready.

"Eleanor Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, extortion, and forging public documents," the lead detective announced sternly.

As the officers stepped forward and snapped heavy steel handcuffs around Eleanor’s wrists, she didn't weep or ask for a lawyer.

She turned her head slowly to look at Mark, a terrifying, grotesque smile spreading across her face.

"You think you won, Mark?" Eleanor whispered, leaning close as she was dragged past him.

"Check your wife's coat pocket."
