Chapter 2 - SECRETS BEHIND CLOSEDDOORS

The heavy oak door of the second-floor master bedroom slammed shut with a dull echo.

Mark immediately turned the brass lock, securing the room against the hallway outside.

The muffled shouting of Eleanor and the guests below faded into a tense, uneasy quiet.

Outside, the late afternoon sun cast long, sinister shadows across the carpet.

Leo began to cry softly, his tiny body trembling against Sarah's chest.

Mark gently wrapped his arm around Sarah and guided her toward the edge of the bed.

"Sit down, Sarah," Mark said, his voice soft but weighted with deep anxiety.

He gently lifted Leo from her arms and placed the exhausted toddler on the mattress.

Leo curled up into a small ball, clinging tightly to a plush blanket.

Sarah sat on the bed, staring blankly at her own hands.

Her fingers were shaking so violently she could barely keep them still.

Mark pulled a wooden chair near her and sat down, leaning in close.

He carefully reached out and took her hands in his.

"Look at me, Sarah," Mark requested softly.

Sarah hesitated before slowly raising her eyes to meet his.

Her eyes were bloodshot, surrounded by dark circles and wet with fresh tears.

"You're safe in this room right now," Mark reassured her, stroking her hand.

"The guards are standing outside the door, but they won't dare break in while I'm here."

"Now, I need you to tell me what really happened while I was in London."

Sarah swallowed hard, a visible tremor passing through her throat.

"Mark... you don't understand," she whispered in a broken voice.

"If I speak, Julian will ruin everything."

"He will destroy you, he will destroy your career, and he will take Leo away from us."

Mark’s jaw tightened, his eyes narrowing with fierce determination.

"Julian has no power over us, Sarah."

"I have my own company, my own income, and my own legal team."

"He cannot touch my family."

Sarah released a bitter, sorrowful laugh that ended in a soft sob.

"You think this is about money or corporate influence, Mark?"

"It's not."

"It's about what your father left behind before he died five years ago."

Mark froze, his brow furrowing in deep confusion.

"My father?" Mark asked, leaning closer.

"Father died of a heart attack in his sleep."

"His estate was divided according to the family trust five years ago."

Sarah shook her head rapidly, her voice dropping into a desperate whisper.

"That's what Eleanor and Julian wanted everyone to believe!"

"Three nights ago, I was putting Leo to sleep in the nursery upstairs."

"I heard loud metallic scraping sounds coming from your father’s old study."

"I thought it was a burglar, so I grabbed a heavy brass candle holder and went to check."

"When I opened the study door, I saw Julian kneeling in front of the wall safe."

"He had specialized drilling tools spread out across the Persian rug."

"He was trying to force the mechanical lock open."

Mark listened intently, his breath catching in his chest.

"What did you do?" Mark asked.

"I called out his name and threatened to press the silent security alarm," Sarah explained, her voice trembling.

"Julian jumped up immediately."

"His face was completely twisted with pure rage, like a man possessed."

"He grabbed me by the shoulders and slammed me violently against the heavy mahogany desk."

"That's how I got the bruise on my side, Mark."

Mark clenched his fists so hard his nails cut into his palms.

"He laid his hands on you..." Mark growled, his blood boiling.

"It gets worse, Mark," Sarah continued, tears streaming freely down her bruised face.

"He grabbed my throat with his left hand and squeezed until I couldn't breathe."

"He told me that if I yelled, he would kill Leo in his crib before anyone could reach us."

"I was terrified, Mark."

"I couldn't breathe, and I couldn't scream."

"While he held me against the desk, he used his right hand to force the safe handle down."

"The lock broke, spilling a thick leather folder onto the floor."

"Julian snatched the folder, but a small brass item fell out onto the carpet."

"He was so distracted by the folder that he didn't notice the item rolling under the desk."

Sarah reached into the inner lining of her dress pocket with trembling fingers.

She pulled out a small, old brass key attached to a faded leather tag.

"When Julian ran out of the room with the folder, I crawled under the desk and grabbed this," Sarah whispered.

Mark stared at the key resting in the palm of her hand.

Engraved on the tarnished brass handle were three faint numbers: 4 - 1 - 9.

"What was inside that leather folder, Sarah?" Mark asked, staring at the key.

Sarah looked directly into Mark's eyes, her voice quivering with terror.

"It was your father's original, unmodified last will and testament."

"Your father didn't leave the family fortune or the estate to Eleanor or Julian."

"He disinherited Julian completely because of his illegal gambling debts."

"He left ninety percent of the entire Vance empire to your son, Leo."

Mark felt as if the room was spinning beneath his feet.

"To Leo?" Mark breathed out, completely stunned.

"Yes," Sarah affirmed, nodding frantically.

"And the remaining ten percent was put into a trust fund for you."

"Eleanor and Julian have been living on a fraudulent trust fund for five years!"

"Julian swore that night that he would destroy that folder and make sure Leo never lives to see his third birthday."

Before Mark could process the overwhelming shock, heavy boot steps echoed outside in the hallway.

A loud, violent bang rattled the bedroom door frame.

"Mark!" Julian's voice shouted harshly from the other side of the wood.

"Open this door immediately, or my men will kick it off its hinges!"
