Chapter 6 - BLOOD ON THE GLASS

The battered SUV limped into the industrial district as the first cold rays of sunlight broke through the morning smog.

Mark pulled the vehicle into a narrow alley behind a row of dilapidated, abandoned brick warehouses.

He killed the engine and the dim headlights, plunging the interior into a quiet, shadowy calm.

The silence inside the cabin was almost deafening compared to the roar of the mountain storm.

Sarah sat huddled in the backseat, holding the sleeping toddler tightly against her shoulder.

Her eyes were wide and hollow, staring at the shattered glass scattered across the leather seats.

Mark leaned his head back against the headrest, closing his eyes as pain radiated through his spine and shoulders.

Blood had dried along his jawline from the small cuts caused by the exploding window glass.

"Mark..." Sarah whispered, her voice cracked and trembling.

"Are you hurt?"

Mark opened his eyes slowly and looked at her through the rearview mirror.

"I'm fine," Mark replied, his voice raspy and dry.

"Just bruised."

"What about you and Leo?"

"He's asleep," Sarah murmured, gently stroking the toddler's curly hair.

"He was so scared, Mark..."

"I was so scared."

Mark unbuckled his seatbelt and turned around in his seat to face her directly.

"We survived the night," Mark said firmly, trying to instill confidence in his voice.

"That's all that matters right now."

Sarah reached into her coat pocket and pulled out the small brass key with the numbers 4 - 1 - 9 stamped onto its surface.

"What are we going to do with this?" Sarah asked, holding it out toward him.

"Julian is dead, Mark..."

"We saw the car explode."

Mark looked at the key, his expression darkening with intense skepticism.

"Julian is clever, Sarah," Mark warned softly, taking the cold piece of brass from her hand.

"Until I see a body, I am assuming he is still breathing."

"And even if Julian is gone, my mother still controls the family assets and security network."

"She won't stop until she gets this key back."

Mark looked out the cracked windshield, watching the smog drift down the alleyway.

"We need a safe place to hide while I figure out what this key opens," Mark said, examining the brass handle.

"It doesn't look like a standard house or door key."

"It looks like a deposit box key for a private bank vault."

Suddenly, the secondary burner phone hidden in Mark’s glove compartment began to vibrate violently.

The harsh buzzing sound echoed through the silent cabin like an alarm bell.

Sarah gasped, recoiling into the corner of the backseat.

Mark froze, staring at the illuminated screen of the prepaid phone.

An unknown, unlisted number was displayed across the glass.

Mark slowly reached over and opened the glove compartment.

He picked up the phone, pressing the speakerphone button before holding it up between them.

"Hello?" Mark said, his voice cold and steady.

A moment of static filled the line, followed by the faint sound of rhythmic breathing.

Then, a harsh, familiar chuckle rasped through the speaker.

"You really thought a little drop down a mountain would kill me, brother?" Julian’s voice sneered through the phone.

Mark’s blood went cold in an instant.

"Julian..." Mark growled, his hand clenching into a tight fist around the phone.

"Did you really think I would drive that sedan myself on a wet mountain road?" Julian laughed weakly, coughing up blood on the other end of the line.

"I sent my security chief to handle you while I took a private helicopter into the city."

"And now, Mark... you are officially a wanted murderer."

Sarah covered her mouth with both hands, tears springing into her eyes.

"Mother has already handed the footage of your SUV forcing my vehicle off the cliff to the police," Julian continued, his voice dripping with sinister satisfaction.

"By noon, your face will be on every news broadcast across the state."

"They are looking for a fugitive who kidnapped his own son and murdered a security guard."

Mark’s jaw clenched so hard his teeth clicked together.

"What do you want, Julian?" Mark demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous register.

"I want the key," Julian stated coldly.

"Bring it to the old abandoned docks at Pier 41 by midnight tonight."

"Come alone, Mark."

"If I see a single police car, or if Sarah steps foot on those docks..."

Julian paused, letting a sickening silence stretch over the line.

"...I will make sure your father's old debts are transferred directly to Sarah's family, and her father will spend the rest of his natural life in a federal prison."

The line went dead with a harsh click.
