Chapter 1 - THE AFTERMATH OF SHATTERED GLASS

The heavy silence that followed the shatter of porcelain felt heavier than the crash itself.

It hung in the air of the brightly lit dining room, thick, suffocating, and sharp enough to slice through bone.

The rich scent of strawberry frosting and expensive red wine quickly dissolved into the metallic smell of pure tension.

Pink cake batter was smeared across the dark, hand-scraped hardwood floor like a bloody stain.

Fine china lay in dozens of jagged silver-rimmed shards, scattered beneath the feet of wealthy guests.

Mark stood in the center of the chaos, his chest heaving violently beneath his tailored blue blazer.

His knuckles were white, trembling from the adrenaline coursing through his veins.

His white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, soaked in cold sweat.

His eyes, dark and fiery, remained locked onto the trembling woman standing near the marble kitchen island.

That woman was his wife, Sarah.

Sarah clutched their baby, Leo, so tightly to her chest that her knuckles turned ghost-white.

The toddler burred his small face into the crook of her neck, whimpering softly against her bruised skin.

Sarah’s dark hair was tied up in a messy, undone bun that was falling apart strand by strand.

She wore a plain sleeveless brown dress that looked utterly out of place in this luxury mansion.

Her collarbone protruded sharply, showing how much weight she had lost over the past three weeks.

But what made Mark’s blood run icy cold were the marks on her face.

A deep, angry purple bruise covered the entire left side of her jawline.

Faint yellowing bruises lined her pale neck, shaped like the distinct imprint of heavy human fingers.

In the background, sitting at the head of the polished oak dining table, was Mark’s mother, Eleanor.

Eleanor sat frozen in her upholstered chair, her beige silk blouse splashed with pink whipped cream.

Her short, styled blonde hair was immaculate, but her face was flushed deep crimson with pure humiliation.

Her gold bracelets clinked loudly as her hands began to shake with uncontrollable anger.

Beside her, two older relatives sat with their mouths hanging open, paralyzed by the sudden violent outburst.

"Are you completely insane, Mark?!" Eleanor’s voice finally shrieked through the room, cracking with rage.

The shrill sound shattered the silence like a whip cracking against wood.

"You ruined your brother’s family gathering for this... this useless servant?!" Eleanor screamed.

She stood up abruptly, her chair scraping harshly against the wooden floorboards.

She didn't look at Sarah with sympathy; she glared at her with pure, unadulterated venom.

Mark took a slow, heavy step toward the head of the dining table.

His polished dress shoes crunched audibly over the broken pieces of the birthday plate.

"She is not a servant, Mother," Mark said, his voice terrifyingly quiet and raspy.

"She is my wife."

"And you treated her worse than a street dog in my own home while I was away."

Eleanor scoffed loudly, brushing a clump of cake off her expensive designer skirt.

"Your home?" Eleanor sneered, throwing her head back in cruel laughter.

"This entire estate belongs to the Vance family legacy!"

"You don't own a single brick of this building, Mark!"

"We allowed her to live here out of charity, and this is how she repays us?"

"She can't even clean a dish without looking like a tragic victim!"

Mark felt something snap deep within his mind.

He stepped past the broken table, closing the distance between himself and his mother.

"She looks like a victim because someone beat her, Eleanor!" Mark roared, his voice echoing off the high ceilings.

The room fell completely dead quiet once again.

The guests shrank back into their seats, terrified to make a single movement.

Sarah pulled gently at the back of Mark’s sleeve, her voice trembling violently.

"Mark... please..." Sarah whimpered softly, tears overflowing from her swollen eyes.

"Please don't do this... it's fine... I'm okay..."

Mark turned his head slowly to look down at Sarah.

The protective fury in his eyes softened for a brief fraction of a second as he looked at her broken spirit.

"It is not okay, Sarah," Mark whispered, his voice cracking with emotional pain.

He raised his hand gently, his fingers hovering just millimeters away from her bruised jaw.

He was terrified that touching her would cause her more pain.

"I left for three weeks on a corporate assignment in London," Mark said, looking into her tear-filled eyes.

"I left you healthy."

"I left you smiling."

"And I come home to find my wife working like a slave with finger marks carved into her neck!"

Eleanor rolled her eyes dramatically, waving her hand dismissively in the air.

"Oh, stop the dramatic performance, Mark!" Eleanor barked sharply.

"She fell down the basement stairs two nights ago because she’s clumsy!"

"Ask her yourself if you don't believe me!"

"She dropped a tray of silver and tumbled down the steps!"

Mark’s gaze shifted instantly from Sarah back to his mother.

He stared directly into Eleanor’s cold, unblinking grey eyes.

He had known his mother his entire life.

He knew the exact subtle twitch of her lip when she was spinning a lie.

"You're lying," Mark said coldly.

"A fall down the stairs doesn't leave five distinct finger marks around a person's throat, Mother."

Eleanor’s face paled slightly, but her stubborn glare remained unyielding.

"Don't you dare accuse your family of abuse, Mark!" Eleanor warned, pointing a sharp manicured fingernail at his chest.

"If you continue this disrespect in front of our relatives, I will have security throw you out!"

Just then, the heavy double doors of the mansion’s front entrance swung open with a slow, deliberate creak.

Heavy, measured footsteps echoed down the grand marble hallway toward the kitchen dining area.

A man in a sharp, tailored black suit stepped into the frame, adjusting his cufflinks.

It was Julian, Mark’s older brother.

Julian had the same cold, sharp facial features as Eleanor, paired with slicked-back dark hair.

He looked down at the cake-covered floor, then at Mark, and finally at Sarah.

A faint, sinister smirk played on the corner of Julian's lips.

"My goodness," Julian said smoothly, his voice dripping with fake concern.

"What on earth happened in here?"

"Did the little maid throw another emotional tantrum?"

Mark turned his body fully toward his brother, his muscles locking in place.

The air in the room suddenly felt twenty degrees colder.

Mark looked at Julian’s right hand.

Wrapped tightly around Julian’s knuckles was a thick layer of fresh white medical bandage.

Mark’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits.

"Julian," Mark said, his voice dropping an octave into a lethal register.

"What happened to your hand?"

Julian stopped walking, his smirk fading slightly as he met Mark’s burning gaze.

He slowly raised his bandaged hand, casually inspecting his own knuckles.

"Oh, this?" Julian chuckled softly, taking another step closer.

"I had a little slip in the study two nights ago."

"Hit my hand against the edge of Father's heavy iron safe."

Sarah gasped quietly, taking an instinctive step backward into the shadow of the kitchen counter.

Mark noticed her reaction instantly.

He saw the overwhelming terror in Sarah’s eyes the moment Julian stepped into the room.

She wasn't afraid of Eleanor.

She was absolutely terrified of Julian.

"You hit the safe?" Mark asked, stepping directly into Julian’s path.

"Or did you hit my wife?"

Julian stopped in his tracks, his dark eyes locking onto Mark with pure hatred.

The fake smile vanished completely from Julian's face.

"Watch your tongue, little brother," Julian whispered, stepping up face-to-face with Mark.

"You have no idea what kind of mess you walked back into."

"And if you know what's good for you and your pathetic little family..."

Julian leaned in close, his voice dropping so low only Mark could hear him.

"...you will take your bruised wife and get out of this house before sunrise."

Mark didn't flinch.

He didn't back down.

Instead, Mark grabbed Julian by his expensive silk tie, pulling him down until their noses almost touched.

"If you ever touched her, Julian..." Mark growled through gritted teeth.

"...I will tear this entire family legacy down to the ground."

Eleanor gasped loudly from behind them.

"Guards!" Eleanor screamed at the top of her lungs. "Get in here right now!"

Two massive, uniformed security guards burst into the dining room through the side doors.

Their hands rested threateningly on their leather holsters.

"Escort my son Mark and his wife upstairs to their room immediately," Eleanor ordered coldly.

"They are not to leave those quarters until I decide what to do with them."

The guards stepped forward, blocking the exits.

Mark looked at the guards, then at Julian’s cold, triumphant smile, and finally at Sarah’s terrified face.

He knew he couldn't fight two armed guards while Sarah was holding their baby.

Mark slowly let go of Julian’s tie, pushing him back roughly.

"We’re going upstairs," Mark said, keeping his eyes on Julian.

"But this isn't over, brother."

Mark turned around, put his arm firmly around Sarah’s waist, and guided her toward the grand staircase.

As they walked away, Julian pulled a small silver pocket watch from his jacket.

He checked the time with a cold, calculating look in his eyes.

May you like

"You have six hours, Mark," Julian murmured under his breath, unheard by the others.

"Six hours before everything you think you own vanishes forever."
