Chapter 6 - The Unholy Alliance

The high-end penthouse apartment overlooked the glittering city skyline.
Victoria poured two glasses of vintage champagne and handed one to Eleanor.
"To a seamless operation, Lady Eleanor," Victoria purred, raising her glass.
Eleanor took a small sip, her face expressionless.
"Don't celebrate yet, Victoria," Eleanor said sternly.
"Julian is relentless."
"He is currently trying to bypass the board's decision with his lawyers."
Victoria smiled venomously.
"He won't succeed."
"The maid is currently locked in a cell on charges of aggravated assault and child endangerment."
"By tomorrow morning, my lawyers will ensure she signs a confession statement in exchange for a reduced sentence."
"And what about the child?" Eleanor asked, her eyes narrowing.
"Lily knows too much."
Victoria leaned closer, her smile fading into something sinister.
"Children have fragile memories, Eleanor."
"A few weeks at the private clinic in Switzerland under heavy sedation, and she won't remember a thing about her mother."
"She will only remember that her crazy maid tried to hurt her."
Eleanor stared at Victoria for a long moment before raising her glass again.
"Make sure it is done cleanly."
"If any link connects Clara's death to my family, I will throw you to the wolves myself."
"Understood," Victoria whispered.
Meanwhile, in a damp holding cell at the central police station, Chloe sat on a cold metal bench.
The door opened, and Detective Vance walked in holding a thick file.
He sat down across from her and placed his recorder on the table.
"Miss Chloe, I'm going to turn off this recorder for two minutes," Vance said quietly.
Chloe looked up, her eyes bruised and tired.
"Why?" she asked defensively.
Vance reached into his pocket and pulled out a small thumb drive.
"Because I watched the unedited video from the mansion twice," Vance said softly.
"And because six months ago, I was the officer who responded to Clara Sterling's fatal fall."
"I knew something was wrong that night, but the case was snatched away from me by the Chief of Police."
Chloe's heart skipped a beat.
"You believe us?" Chloe asked, hope flaring in her chest.
May you like
"I believe the little girl," Vance said.
"And I need your help to tear this conspiracy wide open."
