Chapter 9 - BOX 408

The vault of the First National Bank of Chicago was quiet, cool, and lined with thousands of gleaming stainless steel deposit boxes.
The bank manager, accompanied by two armed state security agents, turned his master key into the upper lock of Box 408 before stepping back.
Lily inserted her brass key into the lower lock and turned it until a solid click signaled the mechanism releasing.
She pulled the long metal container from the wall and set it down on the velvet-lined viewing table in the center of the private room.
With trembling fingers, she lifted the lid.
Inside lay thick leather-bound binders, black flash drives, and hundreds of signed affidavits detailing illegal offshore shell corporations used by Eleanor Hale for over two decades.
At the very top of the stack sat a small, unsealed envelope addressed simply to "Lily."
She opened the envelope and pulled out a single photograph and a small handwritten note.
The photograph showed Julian holding a newborn Mia in the hospital, a radiant, happy smile on his face—a far cry from the stressed, burdened man he had become in his final months.
The note read: "This is what we fought for. Everything in this box guarantees that no one can ever take her future away from you."
Tears finally fell freely down Lily's cheeks, dropping onto the glossy surface of the photograph.
"Mrs. Hale?" the lead state investigator asked gently from the doorway.
"Is this the evidence specified in the federal warrant?"

Lily wiped her eyes, took a deep breath, and turned to face the officer.
"This is everything," she declared.
