Chapter 11 - RECLAIMING THE HOME
Two weeks later, the spring sun shone brightly over the manicured lawns of the Hale estate.
The heavy iron gates stood wide open, welcoming a small fleet of moving vans instead of security vehicles.
Lily stood on the wide front porch, watching as workers carefully carried out the pompous portraits of the old family matriarchs to be placed into storage.
Mia was running across the lush green lawn, laughing as she chased a butterfly, her stuffed bunny still tucked under her arm.
Marcus walked up the stone steps, holding a clipboard with final security clearance documents.
"The property titles have been officially transferred into the trust for Mia," Marcus reported with a faint smile.
"Eleanor's legal team accepted the plea bargain this morning."
"She will be serving twelve years in a federal facility without possibility of parole."
Lily turned to look at the grand house that had once felt like a prison.
Without the cold cruelty of Eleanor and her sycophants, the sun warm on its brick façade, it finally looked like a home.
"And Richard?" Lily asked.
"He cooperated fully with the grand jury," Marcus replied.
"He's giving up everyone involved in the cover-up."
"It's over, Mrs. Hale."
"You can finally live your life."
Lily took a deep, cleansing breath of the fresh spring air.
