Chapter 2 - SHADOWS OF THE ESTATE

The rain began to fall in heavy, rhythmic sheets as the fleet of dark SUVs rolled out of the massive iron gates of the Hale manor.
Inside the rear passenger seat of the lead vehicle, Lily leaned her head back against the leather headrest, closing her eyes for the first time in days.
Her daughter lay fast asleep across her lap, clutching the soft bunny whose hidden microphone was still humming softly with recorded data.
Beside them, Marcus, the head of the security detail Julian had quietly hired months before his death, monitored a glowing tablet screen.
"The audio feed cleared out perfectly, ma'am," Marcus said softly, not wanting to wake the little girl.
"We have explicit audio of Eleanor Hale blackmailing the estate executors and threatening physical removal of your daughter."
"Is it enough to secure the emergency injunction?" Lily asked, her voice weary but sharp.
"It's more than enough," Marcus confirmed.
"Combined with the financial audit we pulled from the offshore accounts yesterday, the court will issue a full freezing order on all Hale family proxies by dawn."
Lily looked out the tinted window at the passing city lights, memories of Julian washing over her like a tidal wave.
He had known his family was ruthless, but even he hadn't anticipated just how far his mother and sister would go once he was gone.
They had tried to scrub Lily and her child out of the family history, framing her as an unfaithful wife to void the inheritance clause.
They hadn't realized that Julian had spent the final months of his life building an ironclad fortress of evidence to protect his real family.
"Where are we heading?" Lily asked, glancing back toward the fading lights of the estate.
"To the safehouse in Saint Cloud," Marcus replied.
"It's fully off the grid, monitored around the clock, and locked down."
May you like
"Good," Lily said quietly.
"Because tomorrow, Eleanor won't just be angry; she will be desperate."
