Chapter 9 - The Diagnosis

Adrian climbed the grand staircase, each step feeling heavier than the last. He reached the second floor and turned down the carpeted hallway toward Lily’s bedroom. The door was slightly ajar.
Inside, the warm glow of a bedside lamp illuminated the room. Dr. Evans was sitting on a wooden chair beside the bed, carefully applying a soothing antibacterial ointment to Lily’s bruised wrist before wrapping it in clean white gauze. Noah was sitting cross-legged on the duvet, clutching a giant stuffed bear, his tear-streaked face now washed clean.
“All done, little lady,” Dr. Evans said with a gentle smile, patting Lily’s knee. “You were very brave.”
Adrian stepped into the room. Lily’s eyes immediately found his, and she reached out with her uninjured arm. Adrian crossed the room, sat on the edge of the mattress, and pulled both of his children into his lap.
“How are they, Robert?” Adrian asked, his voice low.
Dr. Evans stood up, gesturing toward the hallway. Adrian gently kissed Lily’s forehead. “Daddy will be right back, sweetheart. Eat the ice cream Martha is bringing up.”
Adrian stepped out into the corridor with the doctor, pulling the door almost shut behind them.
Dr. Evans’s warm bedside manner vanished, replaced by the grim professionalism of a veteran physician. He handed Adrian a signed medical intake clipboard.
“The physical injuries are superficial to moderate, Adrian,” Dr. Evans said quietly. “The contusions on Lily’s wrist match forceful manual compression—distinct adult fingerprints. There are micro-abrasions from fingernails. Noah has mild dehydration and elevated cortisol levels, consistent with extreme acute panic, but no broken bones or internal trauma.”
Adrian let out a long, ragged exhale of relief, though the anger inside him burned hotter than ever.
“The real battle is going to be psychological,” Dr. Evans warned, tapping the file. “Lily took the brunt of the abuse to protect her baby brother. She’s showing early signs of hyper-vigilance. She thought you wouldn’t believe her, Adrian. That woman spent weeks systematically gaslighting that poor girl, convincing her that you loved your new wife more than your own blood.”
Adrian felt a physical pain in his chest, as if someone had driven a blade between his ribs. “I will spend every day of the rest of my life proving to her that she is my entire world.”
“Good,” Dr. Evans said. “Because tomorrow, child protective services and the district attorney’s investigators will need to conduct a forensic interview. I will be present, but Lily needs to know her father is her impenetrable shield.”
“She will never have to be afraid again,” Adrian vowed. “Not in this house. Not anywhere.”
Just then, Adrian’s phone buzzed in his pocket. It was an alert from his corporate legal counsel, Arthur Vance—his uncle and the chief legal strategist for the Vance family empire.

Adrian swiped the screen. “Arthur. Tell me you’ve seen the filings.”
“Adrian,” Arthur’s booming voice came through the speaker. “The police report just hit the county prosecutor’s desk. Vanessa’s high-powered defense attorney is already trying to post bail. But we’ve got a massive problem you didn’t anticipate.”
