Chapter 5 - Frame by Frame

On the ultra-high-definition screen, the scene played out with devastating clarity.

The camera mounted in the corner of the great room showed the living area from an elevated angle. Lily and Noah were sitting near the rug, completely silent, watching the blue ball roll harmlessly to a stop against the base of the table.

Then, the video showed Vanessa rising from the sofa.

Her face on the screen wasn’t the face of a caring stepmother. It was twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated malice. The speakers filled the room with the sound of her heels striking the floor like sharp claps of thunder.

“Enough!” the recorded voice snarled.

Adrian watched without blinking. His jaw was set so tightly that the muscles along his cheeks bulged.

On the screen, Vanessa reached down. The camera caught the exact moment her hand locked around Lily’s wrist. The microphone picked up the sickening crunch of the grip and Lily’s immediate gasp of pain. Then, Vanessa roughly yanked Noah off the floor by his tiny shirt collar, leaving the boy’s head to snap backward dangerously.

“You need discipline,” the recorded Vanessa said coldly. “Your father pays for peace in this house, not noise.”

The video transitioned seamlessly to the exterior patio feed as the automated tracking cameras switched views. The footage showed Vanessa marching the children across the grass, dragging Lily along while carrying Noah like a sack of trash.

Adrian watched as Vanessa opened the rotting door of the doghouse.

The camera’s directional microphone captured every word of Vanessa’s crouched whisper: “Your father believes whatever I tell him. And today, I’m going to tell him you were asleep all afternoon.”

Then came the shove. The heavy slam of the door. The distinct, metallic click of the iron bolt being driven home.

On the screen, Vanessa stood back up, dusted off her hands, checked her reflection in the glass patio door, adjusted her hair with a cold, satisfied smirk, and walked calmly back inside.

The video continued. The screen displayed the dark, closed door of the shed. Through the exterior audio feed, the sound of Noah’s muffled, frantic wails and Lily’s desperate sobs filled the Vance family living room.

Vanessa stood frozen in the center of the room. Her hands were shaking uncontrollably now. The silence between them after Adrian pressed pause was heavier than the darkness inside the shed.

“Adrian…” she stammered, her voice thin, reedy, and stripped of all its charm. “I… I lost my temper. It was just an exercise in timeout. I was under so much stress. You don't know how difficult it is to manage this house all day while you're in the city…”

Adrian stood up from the table. He didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t throw anything. He picked up his phone, dialed a three-digit number, and brought the receiver to his ear.

“Dispatch,” Adrian said clearly. “My name is Adrian Vance. I need an immediate police response to 1442 High Ridge Lane. I am reporting an active case of aggravated child abuse, felony unlawful imprisonment, and endangerment of a minor. The evidence is secured on video.”
