Chapter 4 - The Closed Circuit

Vanessa let out a sharp, scoffing laugh, crossing her arms over her chest. “Go ahead. Look at your precious feeds. You’ll see that the system malfunctioned during the afternoon heat. The garden camera was offline for maintenance. I even tried to reset the router from my iPad around three o’clock because the whole network went down.”

Adrian didn’t answer. He walked past her into the massive open-concept great room. The vaulted ceilings and modern glass fixtures felt suddenly oppressive, like an arena awaiting an execution.

He sat down at the heavy walnut dining table, placed his phone flat on the polished wood, and tapped the screen.

Vanessa followed him inside, her confidence returning with every step. She had been meticulous. Two hours ago, she had logged into the home automation app using the master tablet in the kitchen, navigated to the camera management interface, disabled the rear courtyard coverage, and performed a localized storage wipe for the hours between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. She had watched the progress bar hit one hundred percent. She had watched the files vanish.

“You’re embarrassing yourself, Adrian,” she said smoothly, leaning against the marble kitchen island. “You’re letting the hysterical imaginations of toddlers dictate how you treat your wife. I expect an apology after you realize your tech failed you.”

Adrian unlocked his screen. He didn't open the standard smart-home application. Instead, he opened a secure, custom terminal branded with the logo of a tier-one private cybersecurity contractor.

“Six months ago,” Adrian began, his voice calm and level, “an intruder attempted to breach the north perimeter fence. Do you remember that, Vanessa?”

Vanessa’s brow furrowed. “Of course I remember. You replaced all the locks.”

“I did more than that,” Adrian continued, typing a fourteen-character alphanumeric passphrase into the custom app. “I had the entire surveillance infrastructure re-engineered. The local tablet in the kitchen is an interface dummy. It controls a mirror network. Any command to disable, wipe, or overwrite footage locally is instantly intercepted. The actual high-definition data streams directly to an off-site, immutable cloud server with cold-storage redundancy.”

Vanessa’s arms dropped to her sides. The color began to drain from her lips.

“Every keystroke. Every camera feed. Every microphone,” Adrian said, turning the phone toward her. The screen showed an active connection to an off-site server labeled VANCE_ESTATE_VAULT_LIVE.

“There are no blind spots on this property,” Adrian said. “And nothing is ever deleted.”

He tapped the screen to cast the feed directly to the eighty-five-inch display mounted above the stone fireplace.

The black screen flickered to life. A crisp, 4K video timestamped at 3:14:22 PM filled the massive monitor. The audio came through the surround sound system with crystal clarity: the soft hum of the air conditioning, the sound of a rubber ball rolling across the marble floor, and then, the sudden, violent slam of an espresso saucer.

Vanessa’s breath hitched in her throat.
