Chapter 6 - The Cracking Veneer

“Hang up that phone!” Vanessa shrieked, lunging across the walnut table to snatch the device from Adrian’s hand.

Adrian sidestepped her with effortless precision. Vanessa lost her balance, her designer heel catching the edge of the oriental rug, and she crashed down onto the hardwood floor with an ungraceful, heavy thud. Her pearl necklace snapped against the floorboards, scattering white beads across the room like dropped marbles.

“Adrian, you can’t do this to me!” she screamed from the floor, her hair falling across her face in wild disarray. “Think about your reputation! Think about the press! If the papers get hold of this, your firm will drop you from the managing partnership! You’ll destroy our family over a disciplinary misunderstanding!”

Adrian looked down at her with pure disgust. “You were never part of this family, Vanessa. You were an infection. And as of right now, you are a trespasser in this house.”

From the grand hallway, the heavy front double doors opened. Dr. Robert Evans, the Vance family’s longtime physician whose private clinic was located just four minutes away down the ridge, hurried into the foyer carrying his medical emergency kit.

“Adrian, Martha called me,” Dr. Evans said breathlessly, taking in the scene—the beads on the floor, Vanessa on her knees, and Adrian standing cold as stone. “Where are the children?”

“Upstairs in Lily’s room, Robert,” Adrian said, his voice softening only slightly. “Please examine them thoroughly. Document every contusion, laceration, and sign of psychological trauma. I want a full forensic medical report prepared for the district attorney’s office within the hour.”

“On it,” Dr. Evans said grimly, nodding once before taking the grand staircase two steps at a time.

Vanessa scrambled to her feet, leaning against the wall for support. Her face had turned an ugly shade of blotchy red. “A forensic report? You’re trying to ruin me! I am your legal wife! Half of everything in this house is mine by law! You can’t just throw me out on the street because of a few bruised feelings!”

“You should have read the prenuptial agreement more carefully,” Adrian said coldly, opening a drawer in the credenza and pulling out a thick manila folder. “Section 14, Subsection B: The Moral and Legal Conduct Clause. Any criminal act committed against a member of the immediate household, including domestic violence or abuse of dependents, immediately voids all claims to spousal support, property division, and marital assets.”

Vanessa stared at the folder in disbelief. “You planned this. You set me up!”

“No,” Adrian said, stepping toward the front entrance as the distant, rising wail of police sirens cut through the quiet afternoon air. “You did this to yourself. And you’re about to find out exactly what the justice system does to people who lock toddlers in wooden boxes.”

The sirens grew deafeningly loud as two squad cars sped through the open iron gates, tires screeching against the circular gravel driveway.
