Chapter 8 - The Witness in the Kitchen

As the squad cars pulled away with their sirens muted, the mansion fell into an eerie, hollow quiet.

Adrian stood in the center of the foyer, looking at the scattered pearl beads across the hardwood floor. He felt a deep, nauseating weight in his gut—not of sorrow for the end of his marriage, but of burning guilt. How had he missed the signs? How had he allowed a sociopath into the sanctuary of his home to terrorize his motherless children?

A soft clearing of a throat came from the arched doorway leading to the kitchen.

Adrian looked up. Martha was standing there, her apron twisted tightly in her hands. Beside her stood Carlos, the groundskeeper, holding his dirty work cap against his chest.

“Mr. Vance,” Martha whispered, her voice cracking with emotion. “We… Carlos and I… we need to speak with you.”

Adrian walked over to them, his expression grim. “What is it, Martha?”

Martha took a deep, shaky breath, her eyes welling with tears. “She threatened us, sir. Three weeks ago, when you were in London for the acquisition summit, she fired young Elena, the maid, on the spot because Elena tried to give Noah an extra juice box when he was crying. Vanessa told us that if any of us ever spoke to you about how she ran this house, she would claim we stole her jewelry and have us blacklisted from every domestic staffing agency in the state.”

Carlos stepped forward, his weathered face tight with anger. “I found Lily hiding in the greenhouse two weeks ago, Mr. Vance. She was shaking. She told me Mrs. Vance took away her dinner because she spilled her milk. I gave the girl my sandwich. I wanted to tell you, sir, but Mrs. Vance saw me talking to the child. She came out to the gardens and told me my visa sponsorship would disappear overnight if I opened my mouth.”

Adrian closed his eyes, his fists clenching so hard his knuckles turned white. The betrayal wasn’t just an isolated incident; it was a systematic campaign of terror waged against everyone vulnerable under his roof.

“Why didn’t you call my private number?” Adrian asked quietly, the pain evident in his voice.

“She monitored the landlines, sir, and she checked the children’s tablets every night,” Martha cried softly. “We were terrified she would hurt them worse if we made a misstep while you were across the Atlantic. We failed those babies, Mr. Vance. If you want to fire us, we understand.”

Adrian opened his eyes and looked at the two loyal workers who had been with his late wife long before Vanessa ever crossed the threshold.

“You’re not fired,” Adrian said firmly. “You were terrorized by a criminal. But from this moment forward, the fear stops in this house. Carlos, go to the shed. Take a sledgehammer. Break that wooden structure into splinters and burn every piece of it before sundown.”

Carlos’s eyes lit up with fierce determination. “Consider it done, Mr. Vance.”

“And Martha,” Adrian added gently. “Bring two bowls of chocolate chip ice cream up to Lily’s room. All the rules are suspended tonight.”
