Chapter 10 - The Retaliation

Adrian walked down the hallway toward his private home study, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “What problem, Arthur?”

“Vanessa’s family,” Arthur said, the sound of rustling legal documents clear over the line. “Her father, Julian Croft, just landed his private jet at the regional airport. He’s already retained Marcus Sterling—the most ruthless criminal defense attorney in the state. Sterling just filed an emergency motion for an emergency protective order against you, claiming that the footage was deepfaked and that you orchestrated this entire scenario to default on the prenuptial agreement.”

Adrian let out a cold, humorless laugh. “Deepfaked? The police took the encrypted raw source files directly from the air-gapped server. The digital signatures are tamper-proof.”

“In a court of law, yes, we’ll destroy them in trial,” Arthur explained urgently. “But Julian Croft isn’t playing for a trial victory. He’s playing the public relations war. He’s already calling board members at your firm, threatening to pull Croft Capital’s fifty-million-dollar fund allocation unless the firm forces you to take an immediate leave of absence and drop the criminal charges against his daughter.”

Adrian entered his study and shut the heavy oak door behind him. He walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the sprawling estate grounds. In the distance, by the hedge line, the rhythmic, thunderous CRACK of Carlos’s sledgehammer echoed through the dusk as the wooden doghouse was smashed into splinters.

“Julian Croft thinks money can erase what his daughter did to my children?” Adrian said, his voice dropping into a register of deadly calm.

“Julian Croft thinks he can bully you into a quiet divorce settlement with a non-disclosure agreement,” Arthur replied. “He’s holding a press conference outside the county jail at 8:00 AM tomorrow morning. He’s going to paint Vanessa as a victim of domestic entrapment by a wealthy, controlling widower.”

Adrian walked behind his massive mahogany desk and opened a secured vault built into the wall behind a framed portrait of his late wife, Eleanor. Inside was a black leather binder labeled CROFT ENTERPRISES – DUE DILIGENCE.

“Arthur,” Adrian said smoothly. “Do you remember why Julian Croft was so eager to have his daughter marry into the Vance family eight months ago?”

Arthur went quiet on the other end of the line. “Because Croft Enterprises was facing an informal SEC inquiry into offshore shell companies.”

“Not an informal inquiry anymore,” Adrian said, pulling a series of encrypted flash drives and financial audit sheets from the safe. “When I vetted Vanessa before our marriage, my intelligence team ran a complete forensic audit on every holding company connected to the Croft family trust. Julian Croft has been running an illegal secondary market liquidity scheme through Caribbean shell banks to keep his company afloat.”

Arthur let out a low whistle. “Adrian… that’s federal penitentiary territory.”

“Julian wants a war?” Adrian asked, his eyes gleaming in the dim light of the study. “Call our public relations firm. Book the grand ballroom at the St. Regis downtown for 7:30 AM tomorrow—thirty minutes before Julian’s little spectacle. We are not just defending our family, Arthur. We are going to completely dismantle theirs.”
