Chapter 13 - The Rebuilding

Three weeks later, the summer sun shone brilliantly over the Vance estate.

The heavy, oppressive atmosphere that had hung over the property like a toxic fog was completely gone. In the backyard, where the rotting wooden doghouse once stood, a brand-new, hand-crafted wooden gazebo had been built, surrounded by vibrant beds of purple lavender, white hydrangeas, and yellow marigolds planted by Carlos.

Lily sat on the wide wooden swing inside the gazebo, a sketchbook resting on her lap. Her wrist was completely healed, the purple bruises replaced by smooth, healthy skin. She was drawing a picture of a giant black sedan driving through a golden gate, with three figures standing on the lawn—a father, a big sister, and a little brother.

“Lily! Catch!”

Noah came running across the soft grass, giggling uncontrollably as he tossed a bright red soccer ball toward her. His cheeks were round and pink, his face free of dirt, his laughter filling the afternoon air with pure, unburdened joy.

Lily caught the ball with both hands and laughed, jumping down from the swing. “You have to kick it, Noah! Like this!”

On the stone terrace, Adrian stood with a cup of fresh coffee in hand, watching his children play. Beside him, Martha placed a tray of freshly baked lemon cookies on the outdoor table.

“They’re sleeping through the night now, Mr. Vance,” Martha said with a warm, genuine smile. “Dr. Evans says their recovery is nothing short of miraculous.”

Adrian took a sip of his coffee, feeling a profound sense of peace settle over his shoulders for the first time in months. “Love heals what fear breaks, Martha. They know they’re safe.”

Just then, Arthur Vance walked through the French doors, carrying a thin blue legal folder.

“Final decree came through from the family court judge an hour ago,” Arthur announced, handing the document to Adrian. “The marriage is completely annulled on the grounds of criminal fraud and physical domestic endangerment. The judge officially stripped Vanessa of any right to use the Vance name, and the permanent restraining order is active nationwide.”

Adrian signed the receipt and handed the pen back to his uncle. “And the criminal trial?”

“She took a plea deal yesterday afternoon,” Arthur said, leaning against the stone balustrade. “Eight years without the possibility of early parole at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. Julian Croft is facing ten to fifteen in federal prison. The entire Croft empire has been liquidated.”

Adrian closed the folder. “Good. Let them become a footnote in history.”
