Chapter 7 - THE ST. JUDE AMBULANCE

Jax didn't even slow down as he approached the stalled ambulance.

He plowed the front bumper of his truck straight into the fallen pine tree, shoving it aside.

The two armed guards panicked, raising their sidearms toward the oncoming truck.

Richard threw his door open while the truck was still rolling.

He tackled the nearest guard straight into the mud before the man could raise his gun.

The guard’s weapon flew into the darkness over the cliff side.

Richard delivered a swift upper punch to the guard's jaw, knocking him cold instantly.

On the other side, Jax grabbed the second guard by his tactical vest and slammed him against the ambulance wall.

He disarmed the man with a single twist of his wrist and tossed him into the brush.

Richard ran straight to the rear heavy doors of the medical transport.

They were locked securely from the inside with an electronic keypad.

"Maya!" Richard screamed, pounding his fist against the reinforced steel.

"Dad?!" Maya's faint, muffled voice answered from within.

"Dad, I'm inside! Help me! The doctor is here!" she screamed in panic.

Richard turned to Jax. "We need a key or a code!"

Jax stepped up, holding the guard's fallen heavy flashlight.

He didn't bother looking for a key code.

Jax slammed the heavy steel end of the flashlight directly onto the glass vision panel.

After three massive strikes, the reinforced glass shattered into a thousand tiny pieces.

Jax reached his long, tattooed arm inside through the broken glass and unlocked the latch from within.

The heavy doors swung wide open.

Inside, a terrified doctor was crouching in the corner, holding a syringe filled with clear fluid.

Maya was strapped down to a steel gurney, her eyes red from endless crying.

The doctor raised the syringe defensively. "Stay back! She is a psychiatric patient!"

Richard stepped into the ambulance, grabbed the doctor by his collar, and threw him headfirst out into the mud.

"Get her unstrapped!" Richard yelled to Jax.

Jax pulled out a pocket knife and slashed through the heavy leather restraint straps in seconds.

Maya immediately reached up and wrapped her arms tightly around Richard's neck.

"Dad... they were going to put me to sleep," she wept violently.

"They said I would never wake up..."

"You're safe now, sweetheart," Richard whispered, lifting her gently off the gurney.

"We have to go before reinforcements arrive," Jax warned, checking his watch.

Suddenly, a loud radio chatter burst out from the fallen guard's walkie-talkie on the floor.

"Unit 4, respond. Is the target secured? Mrs. Vance is arriving at the mountain estate now."

Richard picked up the walkie-talkie, his jaw locked in fury.

He pressed the side button to transmit his voice.

"Tell Victoria I'm coming for her," Richard said into the microphone.

"And tell her she's going to answer for every life she took."

He threw the radio onto the floor and crushed it beneath his heavy boot.
