Chapter 16 - AFTERMATH AT SUNRISE

The morning rain finally stopped, leaving the city streets shining under the soft sunlight.

The plaza gradually cleared as police wrapped crime scene tape around the stage area.

Julian stood near the edge of the fountain, watching the police cruiser drive away into the traffic.

Richard walked over to him, placing a warm hand on his shoulder.

"You did the right thing today, Julian," Richard said gently.

Julian wiped his eyes, giving a tired, sad nod.

"I spent my whole life trying to earn her love, Dad," Julian said quietly.

"I just realized today... she didn't have any love to give."

"You saved Maya's life," Richard reminded him. "That makes you a brother, not her puppet."

Maya walked over, holding her coat wrapped tightly around her shoulders.

She didn't say anything; she simply stepped forward and wrapped her arms around Julian's waist.

Julian broke down completely, burying his face in her shoulder, sobbing quietly.

Jax stood by his pickup truck across the street, watching the family embrace from a distance.

He pulled a lit cigarette from his pocket and took a long, slow drag.

Richard noticed him and walked over, leaving Maya and Julian together.

"Where are you going, Jax?" Richard asked.

"Back to the docks," Jax replied, blowing smoke into the cool morning air.

"My work here is done."

"You don't have to leave," Richard said firmly. "You're Maya's real family too."

Jax looked at Maya, a faint, rare smile touching his rugged, scarred face.

"I've spent twenty years living in the dark, Vance," Jax said softly.

"Today, my sister finally got justice. That's enough for me."

He reached into his leather vest and pulled out an old, faded photograph.

It was the same photograph from the diner—a young Jax holding his little sister as a baby.

He handed it to Richard. "Give this to Maya when her child is born."

"Tell her... her real mother loved her more than life itself."

Jax turned around, climbed into his pickup truck, and started the rumbling engine.

"Take care of her, Richard," Jax said, shifting into gear.

"I will," Richard promised, watching the black truck pull out onto the open road.
