CHAPTER 1: "SHE WHISPERED ONE NAME BEFORE SHE COLLAPSED"

The first scream came from the hospital parking garage.

Not the emergency room.

Not the operating theater.

Outside.

Richard Vance looked up just as a pregnant woman stumbled through the sliding glass doors, one hand wrapped around her swollen belly.

Blood trickled between her fingers.

She took two more shaky steps before collapsing onto the cold concrete.

"Maya!"

Richard sprinted across the driveway without thinking.

The thirty-two-year-old woman struggled to breathe.

Her face was pale.

Her lips had already begun turning blue.

"Help... my baby..."

Richard dropped to his knees beside her.

"It's okay."

"I've got you."

He pressed both hands firmly against the bleeding wound along her side while shouting toward the entrance.

"Code Blue!"

"Pregnant trauma patient!"

Several nurses rushed outside with a stretcher.

A security guard cleared the driveway as doctors flooded through the emergency doors.

Richard stayed beside Maya the entire time.

She grabbed his wrist with surprising strength.

"Don't..."

She gasped painfully.

"Don't let... Victoria..."

Her voice faded.

"What about Victoria?"

Richard leaned closer.

Maya forced herself to open her eyes one last time.

"She's... lying..."

Before she could finish, she lost consciousness.

The monitors connected inside the ambulance immediately began screaming.

"Blood pressure crashing!"

"We're losing her!"

The trauma team disappeared through the emergency entrance.

Richard stood frozen for only a second.

Then he followed.

Inside the operating corridor, chaos exploded.

Doctors shouted instructions.

Nurses pushed carts loaded with surgical instruments.

A fetal monitor echoed through the hallway.

One weak heartbeat.

Then another.

Then silence.

Richard watched through the glass as physicians fought to stabilize both mother and unborn child.

"What happened?" a voice demanded behind him.

Richard turned.

Julian Vance rushed down the hallway wearing yesterday's wrinkled business suit.

His face was ghostly white.

"What happened to Maya?"

Richard grabbed his son's shoulders.

"Where were you?"

Julian blinked.

"I was at the office."

"My phone was off during a board meeting."

"I came as soon as I got the call."

Richard stared directly into his son's eyes.

"Did Maya contact you today?"

Julian slowly shook his head.

"No."

"She texted me this morning."

Richard frowned.

"She said she wanted to tell me something important tonight."

Julian pulled out his phone.

The last unread message from Maya flashed across the screen.

Please don't trust anyone if something happens to me. Especially...

The message ended there.

No name.

No explanation.

Nothing else.

Julian looked up in confusion.

"What does this mean?"

Before Richard could answer, elegant high heels clicked across the polished floor.

Victoria Vance appeared at the far end of the corridor.

She wore a flawless cream-colored designer suit.

Not a strand of blonde hair was out of place.

She looked more prepared for a charity gala than an emergency room.

"My poor son."

She wrapped her arms around Julian.

"I drove here the moment I heard."

Julian hugged her without hesitation.

Richard didn't.

Instead, he noticed something strange.

Victoria's white leather gloves had tiny reddish stains near the fingertips.

Almost invisible.

Almost washed away.

"What happened to your gloves?" Richard asked quietly.

Victoria glanced down for only half a second.

"I cut my hand while cooking."

She smiled.

"The tomatoes were a mess."

Richard said nothing.

The stains weren't bright red.

They had already dried into a darker shade.

Hospital blood looked exactly like that after twenty minutes.

An hour later, the lead obstetrician stepped into the waiting room.

"Mrs. Maya Vance is alive."

Everyone released the breath they had been holding.

"But..."

The doctor hesitated.

"The baby is in severe distress."

"We may need an emergency delivery if her condition worsens."

Julian buried his face in his hands.

Richard placed a hand on his son's shoulder.

"We'll get through this."

Victoria lowered her eyes.

No one noticed the faint smile that disappeared almost instantly from her lips.

Late that evening, Maya finally regained consciousness.

Richard entered her recovery room alone while Julian completed admission paperwork downstairs.

The room was dim except for the glow of medical equipment.

Maya looked exhausted.

She could barely keep her eyes open.

Richard gently took her hand.

"You're safe."

"You made it."

A single tear rolled down Maya's cheek.

"No..."

She whispered weakly.

"They followed me here."

Richard leaned closer.

"Who followed you?"

Maya struggled to speak.

Every word seemed to cost her strength.

"Victoria..."

Richard's expression froze.

"What about Victoria?"

Maya swallowed painfully.

"She said..."

The heart monitor quickened.

"...the baby..."

Her breathing became uneven.

"...must never..."

The room suddenly filled with sharp warning alarms.

Doctors rushed inside.

"Sir, step away from the bed!"

Richard backed toward the wall as physicians surrounded Maya.

One doctor adjusted her oxygen mask.

Another increased the medication flowing into her IV.

After several terrifying minutes, the alarms finally settled.

The lead physician turned toward Richard.

"She'll survive."

"But she cannot handle any more emotional stress tonight."

Richard nodded silently.

He waited until the doctors left.

He sat beside Maya's bed.

She had already drifted back into an exhausted sleep.

Outside the room, he noticed Victoria standing at the end of the hallway.

Watching.

Not crying.

Not praying.

Just watching.

When Richard met her eyes, she smiled politely.

Then she turned and disappeared around the corner.

A cold feeling settled deep inside his chest.

For the first time in thirty years of marriage...

Richard wondered whether the woman he had trusted with his entire life had been hiding a secret far darker than betrayal.

May you like

He had no idea that before sunrise...

Someone inside this hospital would try to finish what had already begun.
