Chapter 10: Rosa’s Secret
Margaret Sloan was arrested near the Canadian border.
Under interrogation, she admitted suppressing Rosa’s call four years earlier and arranging her placement at the estate.
But she denied ordering the hospital intrusion.
“Charles Haynes has his own people,” she said. “Do not blame every sin on me.”
Then she revealed something no one expected.
Rosa had not simply left Columbia because of pregnancy.
Her scholarship had been revoked after an anonymous accusation of research theft.
The accusation came with falsified evidence.
Richard Caldwell had arranged it.
Ethan told Rosa that evening.
She went completely still.
“I thought Professor Wallace reported me.”
“He didn’t.”
“He refused to answer my emails.”
“My father’s investigators threatened his funding.”
Rosa sat down.
The loss of Columbia had shaped every year of her life.
She had blamed herself for trusting the wrong lab partner, for not defending her work better, for being too ashamed to fight.
All of it had been manufactured.
“I could have finished my degree.”
“Yes.”
“I could have given Lily a different life.”
“You gave her a good life.”
“That doesn’t give me back four years.”
“No.”
She looked at Ethan with tears in her eyes.
“Your family destroyed mine before it even began.”
He accepted the truth.
“Yes.”
For a moment, it seemed there was nothing left between them except damage.
Then Rosa told him her own secret.
“I did not only call once.”
Ethan looked up.
“I came to your office.”
“When?”
“When I was seven months pregnant.”
He stared at her.
“Security stopped me in the lobby. Margaret came down. She told me you had seen me on the cameras and refused to come down.”
Ethan’s face drained.
“I was in Chicago that week.”
“I know that now.”
“Why didn’t you tell me this before?”
“Because every time I say what happened, I sound like someone making excuses for keeping your daughter from you.”
Ethan sat across from her.
“We were both manipulated.”
“I still chose silence.”
“And I still chose not to ask questions.”
Neither could erase what they had done.
But for the first time, they saw the difference between blame and responsibility.
“I’m sorry,” Rosa whispered.
“So am I.”
He reached across the table.
Rosa looked at his hand for a long moment before taking it.
That fragile peace lasted less than an hour.
Marcus rushed into the room.
“Charles Haynes has filed an emergency petition challenging Lily’s paternity acknowledgment.”
Ethan stood.
“On what grounds?”
“He claims Rosa committed fraud and that you are mentally compromised.”
Rosa’s face hardened.
Marcus continued.
“He is also petitioning the court to freeze the Caldwell trust.”
“Can he?”
“Temporarily.”
“Why would a judge agree?”
Marcus placed a document on the table.
“Because Charles has produced a second DNA test.”
