There was no response.

A medic began chest compressions.

Ethan sat soaked and shaking, unable to look away.

“Come on, baby,” Rosa whispered. “Come back to me.”

Seconds stretched into years.

Water spilled from her mouth.

She began crying.

Rosa gathered her into her arms, sobbing against her wet hair.

Ethan bowed his head.

She had a broken leg and severe hypothermia, but she survived.

As medics treated her, she looked across the deck at Lily.

For the first time, there was no arrogance in her face.

Only shock.

“I saved her,” Victoria whispered.

Rosa stared at her.

Victoria began to cry.

“No,” Ethan said. “Your father destroyed everything.”

He learned to sit on the floor.

The first time Lily fell asleep against his chest, Ethan did not move for two hours.

Rosa watched from the doorway.

“He has you trapped,” she whispered.
