Chapter 13: Six Hours

Ethan’s team identified the yacht as the Celestine, registered through a Haynes shell company.

Its tracking system had been disabled.

The Coast Guard began searching the Long Island Sound.

Charles Haynes denied knowing where Victoria was.

Then Ethan did something Charles did not expect.

He called a press conference.

Standing beside Rosa, Ethan faced dozens of cameras.

“My daughter, Lily Martinez-Caldwell, has been abducted.”

It was the first time he spoke her full name publicly.

He exposed the threats, the falsified DNA report, the surveillance operation, and the attempted manipulation of the Caldwell trust.

Then Rosa stepped to the microphone.

“Victoria Haynes, Lily is three years old. Whatever you believe Ethan or I have done, she did not do it. Please bring her home.”

The appeal spread across every major news network.

Public opinion changed instantly.

Victoria was no longer the abandoned fiancée.

She was a suspected child abductor.

Charles’s board members began resigning.

Banks froze Haynes accounts.

Business partners withdrew.

Within two hours, Charles called Ethan privately.

“You are destroying both companies.”

“You took my daughter.”

“I did not authorize this.”

“You created Victoria.”

Charles went silent.

“You taught her that people were pieces on a board,” Ethan continued. “Now she thinks a child is something she can trade.”

“I can help find her.”

“Then do it.”

Charles revealed a hidden marina his family used near Montauk.

The Coast Guard located the yacht shortly before sunset.

But Victoria had anticipated them.

She had moved Lily onto a smaller speedboat.

A storm was approaching.

Waves struck the boat as Victoria tried to reach international waters.

Lily cried for Rosa.

Victoria gripped the wheel with shaking hands.

“Stop crying!”

“I want my mama!”

“Your mother ruined everything!”

Lily looked at her with Ethan’s eyes.

“No. You pushed me.”

The simple accusation broke something in Victoria.

She turned toward the child.

“I barely touched you!”

The boat hit a wave.

Lily lost her balance and fell against the side rail.

Victoria lunged and caught her wrist.

For one suspended second, Lily hung over the dark water.

Victoria stared down at her.

She could let go.

She could make the problem disappear.

Then Lily whispered, “Please.”

Victoria’s fingers tightened.

She pulled Lily back into the boat.

Moments later, Coast Guard lights appeared through the rain.

Victoria did not surrender.

She accelerated.

The speedboat struck a submerged marker.

The engine exploded.

Both Victoria and Lily were thrown into the water.

From the rescue vessel, Ethan saw a tiny pink sleeve vanish beneath the waves.

He jumped before anyone could stop him.
