Chapter 6: Victoria’s Version

Victoria was staying at the Haynes family penthouse in Manhattan.
When police arrived, she greeted them in silk pajamas and asked whether Ethan had finally come to his senses.
Instead, they questioned her about Claudia Bell.
Victoria denied everything.
“She handled dozens of personal errands. I had no idea she was photographing children.”
The burner phone complicated matters, but Victoria claimed Claudia must have used her name to extort money.
Her father, Charles Haynes, arrived with three attorneys.
By morning, Victoria had turned the story into a public scandal.
A gossip website published an article titled:
BILLIONAIRE’S SECRET CHILD: MAID ACCUSED OF DESTROYING CALDWELL WEDDING
The article claimed Rosa had hidden Lily deliberately, taken a job inside Ethan’s home, and staged the piano incident to force him into acknowledging paternity.
There was no mention of the bruises.
No mention of the hospital.
No mention of the photograph.
Only a carefully constructed portrait of Rosa as a calculating woman who had waited years to make her move.
By lunchtime, photographers surrounded the hospital.
Rosa stood behind the blinds, shaking.
“They know my apartment address.”
Ethan looked up from his phone.
“You and Lily will not return there.”
“I’m not moving into your house.”
“I didn’t ask you to.”
“You were about to.”
“I was going to offer one of my secured properties.”
“I don’t want your charity.”
“This is not charity. Someone threatened my daughter.”
“Our daughter,” Rosa corrected.
Ethan stared at her.
It was the first time she had said it.
“Our daughter,” he repeated.
Rosa turned away.
“I made decisions for Lily without you because I believed you did not want us. You have every right to be angry. But you do not get to take over now because your name is powerful.”
“I’m not trying to take over.”
“You canceled a wedding, called investigators, sealed a hospital floor, and arranged a new home without asking me.”
“Because every time I failed to act quickly in the past, someone else made decisions that changed my life.”
Rosa heard the pain beneath his anger.
“So this is about control.”
“No. This is about never losing her again.”
The DNA results arrived that afternoon.
Probability of paternity: 99.9998 percent.
Ethan read the page twice.
Then he sat down.
Rosa had expected triumph, anger, perhaps even accusation.
Instead, he covered his face with one hand.
“I missed everything.”
Her resentment weakened.
“Ethan—”
“Her first word. Her first steps. Three birthdays.”
“You didn’t know.”
“But I should have.”
“No,” Rosa said. “I should have found another way to tell you.”
He looked at her.
For the first time, neither of them was defending themselves.
Lily slept between them.
Ethan reached for her small hand.
The moment his fingers touched hers, Lily’s eyes opened.
“Daddy?”
His face broke.
“Yes,” he whispered. “Daddy.”
Outside the hospital, the scandal continued growing.
And inside Victoria’s penthouse, Charles Haynes placed the newspaper on the table and told his daughter the truth she had never known.
“If that child is Ethan Caldwell’s,” he said, “then she is not merely an inconvenience.”
Victoria looked up.
May you like
Charles’s voice dropped.
“She is the only person standing between us and control of the Caldwell empire.”
