Chapter 3: The Answer

Rosa stared at Ethan.

For four years, she had imagined this moment in dozens of different ways.

In some versions, she told him calmly.

In others, he discovered the truth through a medical emergency, an old photograph, or a careless confession from someone who knew her past.

She had never imagined answering him while their daughter cried in her arms and the woman he planned to marry stood only a few feet away.

“Yes,” Rosa whispered.

Ethan stopped breathing.

Victoria gave a sharp, disbelieving laugh.

“No.”

Neither Ethan nor Rosa looked at her.

Rosa lowered her eyes to Lily’s trembling face.

“She’s yours.”

The words seemed to change the temperature of the room.

Ethan’s expression remained controlled, but his hands curled against his knees.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“For three years?”

“Yes.”

“And you worked in my house for two of them?”

Rosa looked up then.

The pain in his voice was unmistakable, but so was the accusation.

“I didn’t come here to deceive you.”

“You brought my daughter into my home and let me walk past her like she was a stranger.”

“I was trying to survive.”

“So was I.”

Rosa’s face hardened.

“No, Ethan. You were building companies. I was choosing between electricity and groceries.”

Victoria stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous. You cannot simply accept her word because the child has similar eyes.”

Ethan finally turned toward his fiancée.

His gaze was cold enough to silence her.

“You pushed her.”

“I barely touched her.”

“You left bruises on her arm.”

Victoria glanced at Lily and then quickly away.

“She was trespassing in a private room.”

“She is three years old.”

“And she is the maid’s child.”

Ethan rose slowly.

The instant the words left Victoria’s mouth, she seemed to realize how they sounded.

But it was too late.

Ethan removed the engagement ring box from his coat pocket. He had planned to give Victoria the matching wedding band that evening as a surprise.

Instead, he placed the box on top of the piano.

“The dinner is canceled.”

Victoria’s face drained of color.

“Ethan.”

“The wedding is postponed.”

“Postponed?”

His eyes shifted to Lily.

“No. Canceled.”

Victoria stared at him in horror.

“You cannot destroy our future because some former lover appeared with a convenient child.”

Rosa flinched.

Ethan did not.

“You destroyed it when you put your hands on her.”

Victoria’s fear turned into rage.

“You do not even know whether she is yours!”

“No,” Ethan said. “But I know exactly who you are.”

He took out his phone and called for the family doctor.

Then he called security.

Victoria’s lips parted.

“You’re throwing me out?”

“You have ten minutes to leave.”

“This is my home too.”

“It never was.”

As security entered the parlor, Victoria looked at Rosa with undisguised hatred.

“This is not over.”

Rosa held Lily closer.

Ethan heard the threat.

“So help me, Victoria, if you come near either of them again, you will learn how quickly I can make your entire world disappear.”

For the first time, Victoria looked afraid.

But as she was escorted from the room, she glanced back at the piano.

And she smiled.

May you like

It was not the smile of a defeated woman.

It was the smile of someone who already had a plan.
