Chapter 9: The Nurse Who Wasn’t a Nurse
Security sealed the hospital again.
The camera footage had been recorded less than an hour earlier.
A review of staff access revealed that a woman wearing hospital scrubs had entered Lily’s room while Rosa was speaking with an attorney.
She had shown a stolen identification badge.
No one knew her name.
Lily had not been harmed, but a small adhesive patch was found behind her shoulder.
Toxicology showed traces of a sedative.
Not enough to kill her.
Enough to keep her asleep.
Rosa nearly collapsed.
Ethan’s calm finally shattered.
“How did she enter a protected floor?”
Hospital administrators offered explanations.
Ethan rejected all of them.
“You had one job,” he said. “Keep a three-year-old safe.”
Rosa turned on him.
“Stop.”
He stared at her.
“Threatening everyone in the room does not make Lily safer.”
“It makes them understand the consequences.”
“No. It makes this about your power again.”
Ethan lowered his voice.
“What do you want me to do?”
“Stand beside me. Not in front of me.”
The words reached him.
He nodded.
Together, they moved Lily to a private pediatric facility under an assumed name.
Only four people knew the location.
Ethan, Rosa, Marcus, and Samuel.
The next morning, Claudia regained consciousness.
Police allowed Marcus to attend the interview.
Claudia admitted working for Charles Haynes, but insisted Victoria had not ordered the hospital intrusion.
“Victoria wanted Rosa frightened,” Claudia whispered. “Her father wanted the child erased.”
“Erased how?” Marcus asked.
Claudia began crying.
“He said no blood. No body. He said accidents were cleaner.”
She confessed that Charles had ordered her to gather medical records, childcare schedules, and photographs.
But when Charles demanded she tamper with Lily’s car seat before a planned trip, Claudia refused.
That was why someone tried to silence her at the motel.
“Who attacked you?”
Claudia swallowed.
“A woman named Margaret.”
Margaret Sloan.
Ethan’s former assistant.
Richard Caldwell’s loyal gatekeeper.
Still carrying out a dead man’s orders.
Police traced Margaret to a property in Connecticut owned by a Caldwell shell company.
When they searched it, they found files on Ethan, Rosa, Lily, Victoria, and Charles.
They also found a sealed letter addressed to Ethan.
He opened it alone.
Inside was a final message from his father.
If you are reading this, the woman has succeeded in attaching herself to you through the child. Do not confuse biology with loyalty. Protect the company. Protect the name. Some branches must be cut away before they poison the tree.
Ethan read the letter twice.
Then he walked to the fireplace and burned it.
He watched every word become ash.
When Rosa entered, he looked at her and said, “I spent my entire life trying to become a man my father respected.”
