Chapter 12: The Empty Bed

The private clinic’s cameras showed Samuel entering through the restricted entrance.
He carried authorization papers bearing Ethan’s electronic signature.
The papers ordered Lily transferred for neurological imaging.
No one questioned him.
By the time staff realized the order was false, Samuel and Lily had disappeared.
Rosa stood beside the empty hospital bed, unable to breathe.
Button lay on the pillow.
Ethan arrived twelve minutes later.
Rosa struck him across the face.
“You trusted him.”
Ethan did not move.
“You brought him into this.”
“Yes.”
“You said only four people knew.”
“I know.”
“Where is my daughter?”
“I will find her.”
“No!” Rosa screamed. “Do not give me a promise. Bring her back.”
It was the first time she had screamed at him.
It was also the first time he had no answer.
Marcus traced Samuel’s vehicle to an abandoned warehouse near the harbor.
Police surrounded the building.
Inside, they found Samuel tied to a chair, bleeding from the forehead.
Lily was not there.
Samuel claimed Charles had threatened his family.
“I gave them access,” he confessed. “But I did not know they planned to take her. I thought they only wanted fresh DNA samples to challenge the trust.”
“Who took her?” Ethan demanded.
“Victoria.”
The name stunned everyone.
Victoria had pretended ignorance while helping her father from the beginning.
She had shoved Lily not merely out of cruelty, but because she recognized the child from surveillance photographs.
The fall had been impulsive.
Everything afterward had been planned.
Samuel gave them the address of a Haynes-owned property near the Connecticut coast.
Ethan wanted to go with police.
Marcus refused.
“You are emotionally involved.”
“She is my child.”
“That is exactly why you stay behind.”
Rosa stepped forward.
“I’m going.”
“No,” Ethan said.
She turned on him.
“You do not decide that.”
“Victoria hates you.”
“She has my daughter.”
They went together but remained behind the tactical team.
The coastal house appeared empty.
Inside, police found food, children’s medicine, and Lily’s pink hoodie.
But no Lily.
On the wall was a live video feed.
Victoria appeared on-screen, standing beside Lily on a yacht.
The child was crying quietly, one hand wrapped around a railing.
Victoria smiled into the camera.
“You took my wedding,” she said. “You took my future. Now I’m taking yours.”
Rosa moved toward the screen.
“Victoria, please. She’s scared.”
“She should be.”
Ethan’s voice became deadly calm.
“What do you want?”
“Transfer the controlling Caldwell shares to my father.”
“You know I can’t do that while the trust is frozen.”
“Then unfreeze it.”
“That requires a court order.”
“You have six hours.”
“And if I refuse?”
Victoria looked down at Lily.

The yacht moved through dark water.
“Then your daughter learns how unforgiving the ocean can be.”
