Chapter 9 - THE FINAL PHASE

“What does that mean?”

Ryan stood in Ortiz’s office staring at the list.

“We don’t know yet,” she said.

Claire sat beside Maya.

“I do.”

Everyone looked at her.

Claire pointed to Ryan’s name.

“Mom doesn’t remove people until she has someone ready to replace them.”

Ryan frowned.

“Replace me with who?”

Claire’s eyes moved toward Oliver.

Ryan understood.

“No.”

Maya’s face went pale.

Claire continued.

“If she controls Oliver’s trust, she controls enough voting shares to dominate Whitmore Holdings.”

Ryan began pacing.

“But only if I’m removed as trustee.”

“Exactly.”

Maya looked at the legal documents.

“She was going to make me look dangerous.”

“And Ryan look incapable,” Claire said.

“Then she becomes the only responsible family guardian left.”

Ortiz leaned back.

“A legal takeover through a three-year-old.”

Claire nodded.

“Mom never cared about titles.”

She looked at Ryan.

“She cares about control.”

Prosecutors moved quickly.

Charges were prepared involving evidence tampering, fraud, child endangerment, and conspiracy.

But Evelyn was gone.

Her passport remained at home.

Her driver had not seen her.

Her primary vehicle was still in the garage.

She had vanished before police entered the estate.

Ryan stared at the news report that afternoon.

For once, Evelyn Whitmore’s name appeared beneath a photograph she had not approved.

AUTHORITIES SEEK BUSINESS MATRIARCH FOR QUESTIONING.

Maya turned off the television.

“Oliver doesn’t need to hear this.”

Ryan nodded.

Their son was building a tower from plastic blocks on the hotel carpet.

For the first time in two days, his breathing sounded normal.

Ryan watched him.

“That’s what she almost took from us.”

Maya looked at him.

“What?”

“This.”

Oliver laughed when his tower fell.

Ryan’s eyes filled.

“Something ordinary.”

Maya reached for his hand.

They sat in silence.

Then Ryan said, “I need to tell you something.”

Maya waited.

“If we get through this, I’m resigning from the family trust.”

She frowned.

“Why?”

“Because I don’t want Oliver’s life decided by documents written before he was born.”

“Ryan—”

“I spent my whole life believing this family money protected us.”

He looked toward Claire.

“It didn’t.”

Claire gave a sad smile.

“No. It just gave Mom better weapons.”

Ryan’s phone vibrated.

A private number.

He nearly ignored it.

Then a text arrived.

DON’T LET POLICE TRACE THIS.

Another message.

I HAVE INFORMATION ABOUT EVELYN.

Ryan showed Ortiz.

She immediately began working with the technical team.

Then the caller phoned.

Ryan answered.

A man whispered.

“Mr. Whitmore?”

“Yes.”

“It’s Calvin Ross.”

Ryan stood.

“Where are you?”

“I can’t tell you.”

“You photographed my wife.”

“No.”

Ryan stopped.

“Then who did?”

Ross breathed heavily.

“Your mother hired someone else.”

Ryan’s blood went cold.

“Why?”

“To scare Maya into leaving town.”

“Where is my mother?”

Ross hesitated.

“You need to listen carefully.”

“I’m listening.”

“She has a safe apartment in Manhattan.”

“Address?”

“I’ll give it to police.”

“Why help now?”

Ross went silent.

Then said,

“Because I saw the nursery footage.”

“You installed the camera.”

“Yes.”

“You knew what she planned.”

“I knew she wanted to frame Maya.”

Ryan’s voice became deadly quiet.

“But?”

“I didn’t know she would take the inhaler.”

Ryan closed his eyes.

Everyone always had a line.

And everyone discovered Evelyn had crossed it only after helping her reach it.

Ross continued.

“She’s not hiding because she’s afraid of jail.”

“Then why?”

“She’s waiting.”

“For what?”

Ross whispered,

“For the emergency board meeting tomorrow morning.”

Ryan froze.

“What board meeting?”

May you like

“The one where she plans to remove you as CEO.”
