Chapter 11 - THE FORGED WILL

For five full seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Ryan laughed.

“You expect us to believe you found a twelve-year-old trust amendment today?”

Evelyn’s attorney didn’t blink.

“It was held privately.”

“By whom?”

“Graham Price.”

Claire stood.

“That makes it worthless.”

The attorney’s face tightened.

Detective Ortiz stepped closer.

“Hand it over.”

Evelyn finally lost her composure.

“No.”

Every head turned.

Ortiz looked at her.

“No?”

“That is private family property.”

“Not anymore.”

Ortiz took the document.

Evelyn looked at Ryan.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.”

Ryan’s voice was calm.

“For the first time in my life, I think I do.”

The board meeting ended without a vote.

Evelyn was taken into custody.

Outside the building, cameras crowded the sidewalk.

Ryan ignored every reporter.

Maya held his hand.

Claire walked beside them.

For once, they left together.

But the trust amendment remained dangerous.

If genuine, it gave Evelyn broad powers over the company even without Oliver’s shares.

A forensic document expert examined it that afternoon.

Paper age.

Ink.

Printer patterns.

Metadata from the electronic source.

By evening, the answer arrived.

The paper was old.

The signature looked authentic.

Ryan stared at the report.

“She won.”

“Not necessarily,” their attorney said.

“What does that mean?”

“The signature may be your father’s.”

Claire went pale.

“No. Dad would never sign this.”

The expert continued testing.

Then he found something small.

Almost invisible.

The signature had been lifted from another document.

Digitally reproduced.

Printed onto aged paper.

Ryan stared at the enlarged image.

A tiny repeated edge pattern betrayed the scan.

Forged.

Again.

By midnight, Graham Price admitted he had helped create it six years earlier.

Evelyn had kept it as insurance.

The board suspended every authority she still possessed.

Her shares remained hers.

Her control did not.

Ryan should have felt victorious.

Instead, he felt empty.

At home three days later, he found Maya sitting alone in the nursery.

The broken lamp was gone.

The camera had been removed.

Oliver slept peacefully in his crib.

Ryan sat beside her.

“I’m replacing the furniture.”

Maya looked at him.

“Why?”

“I don’t want you looking at this room and remembering that night.”

Maya was quiet.

Then she said, “Changing furniture won’t change it.”

Ryan nodded.

“I know.”

She looked at him.

“I’m angry with you.”

“I know.”

“I love you.”

Ryan looked up.

“That somehow makes me angrier.”

He gave a sad smile.

“You have every right.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I don’t want rights to anger. I want my husband.”

“I’m here.”

“You’re here now.”

That hurt.

Ryan looked toward Oliver.

“I spent thirty-five years obeying a woman I called difficult because admitting she was cruel would mean admitting I had allowed it.”

Maya’s expression softened slightly.

“I’m not asking you to hate your mother.”

“I think I already do.”

“No.”

Maya took his hand.

“Don’t become her in reverse.”

Ryan looked at her.

“You don’t heal control with more control.”

Before he could answer, his phone rang.

Detective Ortiz.

“Ryan, we have a development.”

His stomach tightened.

“What now?”

“Evelyn wants to make a deal.”

“No.”

“You haven’t heard what she’s offering.”

“I don’t care.”

Ortiz paused.

“She says she can give us evidence proving Graham Price wasn’t her only accomplice.”

Ryan frowned.

“Who else?”

Ortiz answered,

May you like

“Someone inside your house.”
