Chapter 12 - THE PERSON INSIDE THE HOUSE

Ryan looked around the nursery.

Inside your house.

The words changed the room instantly.

“Who?”

Ortiz wouldn’t say over the phone.

An hour later, Ryan and Maya met her downtown.

Ortiz placed a photograph on the table.

Nora.

The longtime housekeeper.

Maya stared.

“No.”

Ryan remembered Nora’s statement.

Her tears.

The box she supposedly saved.

“You said she helped you.”

“She did,” Ortiz replied.

“Then what is this?”

“Evelyn claims Nora had been reporting on Maya for almost a year.”

Maya went still.

Ortiz showed them bank deposits.

Small at first.

Five hundred dollars.

Then one thousand.

Then five.

Payments routed through a consulting company tied to Evelyn.

Maya whispered, “She knew everything.”

Ryan thought about private conversations in the kitchen.

Arguments.

Doctor appointments.

Their plans.

Nora had always been nearby.

“What did she report?”

Ortiz slid over printed messages.

Maya cried after argument with Ryan.

Maya attended therapy at 2 p.m.

Oliver slept poorly.

Maya raised voice during phone call.

Ordinary moments.

Collected.

Stripped of context.

Turned into evidence.

Maya pushed the papers away.

“I trusted her.”

Ortiz nodded.

“Nora says Evelyn threatened to fire her son.”

“Her son?”

“He works in Whitmore Holdings accounting.”

Ryan frowned.

“Nora said nothing about that.”

“She was ashamed.”

Ryan leaned back.

“Everyone was ashamed.”

He looked at the stack of betrayals.

“And that shame kept my mother powerful.”

Ortiz told them Nora had now agreed to testify fully.

More importantly, Nora revealed something Evelyn had not expected.

There was another recording device.

Not in the nursery.

In Evelyn’s study.

Nora had installed it months ago.

Maya blinked.

“Why?”

“Protection.”

Police recovered the device.

Hours of audio followed.

Most was useless.

Business calls.

Arguments.

Instructions to staff.

Then one recording changed everything.

Evelyn spoke with Calvin Ross.

Ross asked,

“What happens if the boy gets worse?”

Evelyn replied,

“He won’t.”

“You can’t know that.”

“I know Maya. She’ll panic. She’ll make a scene. We record the scene. Then I put the inhaler back.”

Ross sounded uncomfortable.

“And if Ryan arrives first?”

Evelyn laughed.

“Ryan sees what I tell him to see.”

Maya closed her eyes.

There it was.

Thirty-five years of Ryan’s life reduced to one sentence.

Ryan sees what I tell him to see.

Then Ross asked another question.

“What if he finally believes his wife?”

The recording went quiet for several seconds.

Evelyn answered,

“Then I remove him too.”

The prosecution no longer needed to guess intent.

They had it.

Evelyn’s attorneys withdrew their request for immediate release.

The case headed toward trial.

But that night, Ryan received one final envelope.

No return address.

Inside was a photograph of his father.

Thomas Whitmore stood outside the family office twelve years earlier.

Beside him was Graham Price.

On the back, someone had written:

ASK GRAHAM WHY YOUR FATHER CHANGED HIS MEETING FROM FRIDAY TO MONDAY.

Ryan stared at the words.

His father had died on Sunday.

He called Claire.

She answered immediately.

“Ryan?”

He looked at the photograph.

May you like

“We’re not finished.”
