Chapter 2 - THE CAMERA WAS HERS

At the hospital, Ryan stood outside the treatment room with rain still drying on his clothes.
Through the glass, he could see Oliver beneath a small white blanket.
Oxygen tubing ran beneath his nose.
Maya sat beside him, one hand wrapped around his tiny fingers.
A doctor came out.
“Mr. Whitmore?”
Ryan immediately stood straighter.
“How is he?”
“He’s responding.”
Ryan closed his eyes.
The doctor continued.
“His airway became dangerously restricted. The fever made things harder, but we’ve stabilized his breathing.”
“Is he going to be okay?”
“We believe so.”
Ryan released a breath he had been holding since the nursery.
Then the doctor’s expression changed.
“But if his condition had continued without treatment much longer, we could be having a very different conversation.”
Ryan looked through the glass at his son.
A different conversation.
He understood exactly what that meant.
Detective Lena Ortiz arrived twenty minutes later.
She carried the small nursery camera inside an evidence bag.
“We found something else.”
Ryan followed her into a consultation room.
Maya came with him after a nurse promised to stay beside Oliver.
Ortiz placed photographs across the table.
The first showed the hidden drawer beneath the nursery wardrobe.
The second showed a thick folder.
Ryan leaned closer.
Custody petition.
Emergency guardianship request.
Psychiatric evaluation request.
Affidavits.
Printed emails.
A document titled:
TEMPORARY PROTECTIVE PLACEMENT OF MINOR CHILD.
Ryan’s jaw tightened.
“What is this?”
Maya answered quietly.
“What she wanted me to sign.”
Ortiz looked at her.
“Tell me everything.”
Maya rubbed her palms together.
“Your mother came upstairs around four.”
She glanced at Ryan.
“She said Oliver needed ‘more stable care.’ Then she put those papers in front of me.”
“What did she say?”
“That if I signed, Oliver could stay with her for a few weeks while I got help.”
Ryan stared at her.
“You never told me.”
“I was going to.”
“Why didn’t you call me immediately?”
Maya’s eyes filled.
“Because she had your phone.”
Ryan froze.
“What?”
“She said you were in a meeting and didn’t want to be disturbed.”
“That’s impossible.”
“No,” Maya whispered. “It isn’t.”
Ryan checked his coat.
Then his pockets.
His work phone was there.
His personal phone wasn’t.
Ortiz looked at him.
“When did you last have it?”
“At lunch.”
Ryan thought.
Then remembered.
His mother had stopped by his office.
She had hugged him.
Asked to borrow his phone because hers was charging in the car.
Two minutes.
That was all she had needed.
Ortiz opened a laptop.
“We recovered the camera’s local memory.”
Evelyn had installed it herself.
Her account information was registered on the device.
The first clip appeared.
Maya stood near Oliver’s crib.
Evelyn entered carrying the folder.
No sound at first.
Then audio clicked on.
Evelyn’s voice filled the room.
“Sign the papers, Maya.”
“No.”
“You don’t understand what I’m offering you.”
“I understand perfectly.”
Evelyn stepped closer.
“You are temporary.”
Maya stared at her.
“I’m his mother.”
Evelyn smiled.
“You’re Ryan’s wife.”
A pause.
“There’s a difference.”
Ryan’s hands curled into fists.
The next clip began.
Oliver coughed.
Maya reached for the inhaler case.
Evelyn reached it first.
She opened it.
Removed the inhaler.
And slipped it inside her handbag.
Ryan stopped breathing.
On-screen, Maya shouted.
“Give that back!”
Evelyn knocked the lamp from the table.
It shattered.
Then she looked directly toward the hidden camera.
Her voice was clear.
“Once Ryan sees you like this, he’ll give me the child himself.”
Nobody in the consultation room moved.
Ortiz paused the recording.
Ryan stared at his mother’s frozen face.
Then she said something that changed the investigation completely.
“This wasn’t just about your wife.”
Ryan looked at her.
Ortiz tapped the custody documents.
“Someone filed part of this petition with family court three days ago.”
Ryan’s stomach dropped.
“Who?”
Ortiz turned the page around.
At the bottom was an electronic authorization.
It read:
May you like
RYAN WHITMORE.
