Chapter 4 - WHAT MAYA HAD BEEN HIDING

Ryan called back.
No answer.
Again.
Straight to voicemail.
Detective Ortiz traced the number.
Graham Price’s phone had pinged near a private airport forty minutes earlier.
“He may be leaving the state,” she said.
Ryan looked toward Oliver’s room.
“Can you stop him?”
“If we have enough probable cause.”
“You have forged custody papers.”
“We’re working on it.”
Ryan hated those words.
Working on it.
Everything suddenly seemed slower than the danger around them.
Maya touched his arm.
“Ryan.”
He turned.
She looked exhausted.
“There’s more.”
They sat in an empty hospital waiting area.
Maya opened a folder stored on her phone.
Screenshots.
Emails.
Photographs.
For almost four months, she had been documenting Evelyn’s behavior.
Ryan stared at dozens of entries.
January 11 — Evelyn showed up at preschool without permission.
January 26 — Evelyn told teacher Maya was “emotionally fragile.”
February 8 — Evelyn asked pediatrician for Oliver’s full records.
February 21 — strange woman photographed Maya leaving therapy appointment.
March 2 — Evelyn offered Maya $500,000 to leave Ryan and surrender custody.
Ryan stopped scrolling.
“Five hundred thousand?”
Maya nodded.
“She said you’d recover from a divorce.”
“What did you say?”
“I told her to get out.”
“And you didn’t tell me.”
Maya’s voice hardened.
“I was going to tell you that night.”
Ryan remembered walking through the door with Evelyn behind him.
His mother had arrived carrying wine.
She had laughed.
She had hugged Maya.
And Ryan had said,
“See? I told you she was trying.”
Maya had remained silent.
Now he understood why.
“You thought I’d defend her.”
“I knew you would.”
The words landed hard.
Ryan looked down.
“I failed you.”
Maya shook her head.
“Don’t make this about guilt. I need you awake now.”
He looked at her.
“I am.”
“Then understand something. Your mother doesn’t just want me gone.”
Maya opened another photograph.
It showed a page from the Whitmore family trust.
Ryan recognized it instantly.
His grandfather had created the trust decades earlier.
Maya pointed to one paragraph.
“If anything happened to our marriage and you were declared unable to serve as Oliver’s primary guardian…”
Ryan read further.
His face drained.
Control over Oliver’s inheritance would transfer to the senior Whitmore trustee until Oliver turned twenty-five.
The current senior trustee was Evelyn.
Ryan stared at the number.
The trust contained almost eighty million dollars.
“This is about money?”
“Maybe partly.”
Ryan kept reading.
Evelyn would also gain voting authority over shares held in Oliver’s name.
Enough shares to influence Whitmore Holdings.
Ryan whispered, “She could control the company.”
“Through our son.”
Ryan stood so quickly his chair scraped backward.
His phone buzzed.
A message from Detective Ortiz.
WE STOPPED PRICE AT THE AIRPORT.
Then another message appeared.
HE HAS AGREED TO TALK.
Ryan showed Maya.
For the first time all night, hope flickered across her face.
It lasted three seconds.
Then Ortiz called.
“Ryan, Price says your mother paid him.”
Ryan clenched the phone.
“How much?”
“Two million dollars.”
“Then charge them.”
Ortiz went quiet.
“There’s a problem.”
“What problem?”
“Price says Evelyn had a second plan if the custody petition failed.”
Ryan’s voice dropped.
“What second plan?”
Ortiz answered carefully.
May you like
“She intended to have Maya arrested.”
