Chapter 6 - THE FILE ON RYAN

Ryan walked into the interrogation room the moment Ortiz allowed it.

“What evidence?”

Price looked miserable.

“Ryan—”

“What did she have on me?”

Price looked toward Ortiz.

She nodded.

“Answer him.”

Price took a breath.

“Your mother created a file.”

Ryan laughed bitterly.

“Of course she did.”

“Financial transactions. Photographs. Medical information. Company emails.”

“Are any of them real?”

“Some.”

Ryan stopped smiling.

Price continued.

“Others were altered.”

“Which real ones?”

“A prescription you received after your father died.”

Ryan’s face changed.

Maya had never known.

Years earlier, after his father’s sudden death, Ryan had suffered severe insomnia.

A doctor had prescribed medication for six weeks.

Nothing illegal.

Nothing dangerous.

But Evelyn had medical records.

“She wanted to portray you as dependent,” Price said.

“That’s insane.”

“I know.”

“Then why did you help her?”

Price stared at him.

“Because I was weak.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“She threatened me too.”

“With what?”

Price looked ashamed.

“I moved client funds during my divorce.”

Ortiz immediately leaned forward.

“How much?”

“Three hundred thousand. I replaced it.”

“You committed fraud.”

“Yes.”

“And Evelyn knew?”

“She always knows.”

That sentence stayed with Ryan.

She always knows.

Evelyn had built power by collecting weaknesses.

Then she waited until people needed something.

Or feared something.

And she pulled the string.

Price rubbed his face.

“I thought she only wanted leverage over Maya. I didn’t know she’d endanger Oliver.”

Ryan stepped closer.

“You helped write papers designed to take my child.”

“I know.”

“No. You don’t.”

Ryan’s voice stayed low.

“My son stopped breathing correctly because everyone around my mother spent years telling themselves they were only helping with one small thing.”

Price looked down.

Ryan walked out.

That afternoon, Oliver was discharged.

Police had forbidden Evelyn from contacting the family while prosecutors reviewed charges.

Ryan took Maya and Oliver to a hotel under a different name.

He didn’t trust the family estate.

He didn’t trust his own house yet.

He barely trusted himself.

At 7:42 p.m., someone knocked.

Ryan moved toward the door.

Maya stopped him.

“Check first.”

Ryan looked through the peephole.

A woman stood outside.

Late thirties.

Dark coat.

Wet hair.

A face he had not seen in eleven years.

Ryan opened the door slowly.

“Claire?”

His younger sister looked at him.

Ryan almost didn’t recognize her.

The last time he had seen Claire Whitmore, Evelyn had called her unstable.

Difficult.

Dangerous.

Then Claire had disappeared from the family.

Ryan had believed she wanted nothing to do with them.

Claire looked past him at Maya and Oliver.

Then back at Ryan.

“You finally found the camera.”

Ryan’s body went rigid.

“How do you know about the camera?”

Claire stepped inside.

“Because she used one on me too.”

Silence.

Ryan stared at his sister.

Claire reached into her bag.

She removed an old envelope.

Inside were photographs.

Legal papers.

Medical evaluations.

Statements.

Ryan recognized the pattern immediately.

It was the same pattern used against Maya.

Claire’s voice shook.

“Twelve years ago, our mother tried to have me declared mentally incompetent.”

Ryan whispered,

“Why?”

Claire looked him straight in the eye.

May you like

“Because I found out what she did to Dad.”
