Chapter 10 - THE BOARDROOM TRAP

At 8:00 the next morning, Whitmore Holdings looked normal.
Glass towers.
Black cars.
Executives carrying coffee.
Inside the thirty-second-floor boardroom, nothing was normal.
Ryan entered with Maya, Claire, Detective Ortiz, and two attorneys.
Twelve board members sat around the polished table.
At the opposite end was an empty chair.
Evelyn’s chair.
Board member Henry Walsh cleared his throat.
“Ryan, this meeting was called under extraordinary circumstances.”
“By a woman wanted for questioning.”
Walsh shifted uncomfortably.
“She submitted documents before the investigation became public.”
Ryan dropped a folder onto the table.
“Documents forged by Graham Price?”
Another board member looked startled.
“What?”
Ryan turned on the large screen.
The nursery video began.
Evelyn appeared.
She removed Oliver’s inhaler.
Several board members reacted immediately.
One whispered, “My God.”
Ryan let the recording continue.
“Once Ryan sees you like this, he’ll give me the child himself.”
Silence followed.
Ryan faced the table.
“My mother’s petition to remove me as CEO claims I am psychologically unstable, financially compromised, and unable to make decisions.”
He tapped the screen.
“She created the crisis she planned to use as proof.”
Walsh removed his glasses.
“I had no idea.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“That sentence should be printed on the Whitmore family crest.”
No one answered.
Then the boardroom doors opened.
Everyone turned.
Evelyn walked in.
Two attorneys followed her.
Ryan was stunned.
Detective Ortiz immediately stood.
“Evelyn Whitmore.”
Evelyn didn’t look at her.
She looked at Ryan.
“My attorneys have arranged my surrender after this meeting.”
“You don’t get to choose the schedule.”
One attorney stepped forward.
“Detective, my client is cooperating.”
Ortiz’s expression remained flat.
“Your client is about to cooperate much faster.”
She moved toward Evelyn.
But Evelyn lifted one hand.
“Ryan.”
He stared at her.
“Listen before you destroy everything your father built.”
Ryan almost laughed.
“You stole my son’s inhaler.”
“I made a mistake.”
“A mistake?”
“I misjudged how quickly his breathing would deteriorate.”
Maya surged forward.
Ryan caught her arm gently.
Evelyn looked at Maya.
“You were never supposed to keep him from me.”
Maya’s voice shook with rage.
“He is not yours.”
“He is a Whitmore.”
“He’s a child!”
For the first time, Evelyn raised her voice.
“And that child owns enough of this company to protect it from your incompetence!”
There it was.
Not love.
Not concern.
Ownership.
Ryan stepped closer.
“You almost let your grandson suffocate for stock shares.”
Evelyn’s expression cracked.
“I built this family.”
“No.”
Claire stood.
“Dad did.”
Evelyn looked at her daughter with naked hatred.
Claire held up Thomas Whitmore’s notebook.
“And Dad was preparing to remove you.”
The color disappeared from Evelyn’s face.
Ryan saw it.
So did everyone else.
Claire opened the notebook.
“He knew.”
Evelyn whispered, “Put that down.”
Claire smiled sadly.
“That’s the first honest fear I’ve seen on your face in twelve years.”
Ortiz stepped toward Evelyn.
“You’re coming with me.”
But before she could reach her, Evelyn’s attorney spoke.
“There is something this board should know first.”
Ryan turned.
The attorney placed a sealed document on the table.
Thomas Whitmore’s name appeared across the front.
Ryan frowned.
“What is that?”
The attorney answered,
“Your father’s final trust amendment.”
Claire stared.
“That document doesn’t exist.”
The attorney looked directly at her.
“Oh, yes.”
He opened it.
May you like
“And according to this, Evelyn doesn’t need Oliver to control the company.”
