Chapter 4 - THE SECRET INSIDE THE SIGNATURE

The first thing Daniel did after Victoria was taken away was run upstairs.
Not to the bedroom.
Not to his office.
To his mother’s room.
Evelyn Whitmore was sitting beside the window, wrapped in a soft blanket while Clara checked her blood pressure.
For years, Daniel had believed his mother was simply getting older.
More fragile.
More dependent.
But now he realized something much darker.
She hadn’t been losing control of her life.
Someone had been taking it away from her.
“Mom,” Daniel said softly.
Evelyn looked at him.
Her eyes were tired.
But there was something else there.
Relief.
“You finally saw her.”
Daniel sat beside her.
“I should have seen it sooner.”
“No,” Evelyn whispered.
“You wanted to believe the best about someone you loved.”
Daniel looked down.
“How long did you know?”
The room became quiet.
Clara stopped what she was doing.
Evelyn looked toward the window.
“Almost a year.”
Daniel’s chest tightened.
“A year?”
She nodded.
“Victoria changed after your father died.”
Daniel frowned.
“My father died three years ago.”
“I know.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“At first, she was wonderful. She brought me meals. She sat with me. She helped me organize my medication.”
Daniel swallowed.
“That sounds like the woman everyone knew.”
“Yes.”
Evelyn’s voice became quieter.
“Because that was the woman she wanted everyone to know.”
A cold feeling moved through Daniel.
“What happened?”
“She started asking questions.”
“About what?”
“My finances.”
Daniel looked away.
His father had built Whitmore Industries from nothing.
The company was worth billions.
After his death, Evelyn controlled a large part of the family trust.
“She wanted access,” Evelyn said.
Daniel nodded slowly.
“And when you refused?”
“She became different.”
“How?”
Evelyn looked at Clara.
The nurse hesitated.
Then spoke.
“She stopped treating Mrs. Whitmore like a person.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“What did she do?”
Clara took a breath.
“She would leave her alone for hours.”
“She changed her medication schedule.”
“She told visitors that Mrs. Whitmore was confused.”
Daniel looked shocked.
“She was trying to make people think you weren’t capable of making decisions.”
Evelyn nodded.
“She wanted everyone to believe I was losing my mind.”
Daniel looked at the documents Michael had given him.
Then one detail caught his attention.
The signature.
He picked up the paper.
“Mom…”
His voice changed.
“This power of attorney document.”
Evelyn looked at it.
“What about it?”
“This isn’t your signature.”
Her face went pale.
“What?”
Daniel placed it under the light.
“Look carefully.”
The handwriting was close.
Almost perfect.
But not identical.
Clara stepped closer.
“She forged it?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because another thought entered his mind.
A terrifying thought.
Victoria had not been trying to steal money.
She had been trying to legally control everything.
Including Evelyn.
Including the company.
Including him.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
It was Michael.
Daniel answered.
“What happened?”
The lawyer’s voice sounded urgent.
“Daniel, we have a problem.”
“What kind of problem?”
A pause.
“The police found another set of documents.”
Daniel stood.
“What documents?”
Michael lowered his voice.
“Documents showing your mother was declared mentally incompetent six months ago.”
Daniel froze.
“That’s impossible.”
“I know.”
“Who signed them?”
Another pause.
Then Michael said:
May you like
“Your name.”
Daniel felt the room spin.
